Want to make a Gen Xer feel old? Tell 'em that 20 years ago today, on February 14, 1992, "Wayne's World" was released in theaters. ("'Wayne's World' is 20? No way?!" "Way!") Lots of now middle-aged folks who spent too long living in their parents' basements (like Wayne and Garth) have fond memories of what may be the funniest film ever spawned from a "Saturday Night Live" sketch, a film that made a bankable movie comedy star out of Mike Myers, introduced the world to Tia Carrere, helped rescue Rob Lowe's career, and spawned countless catchphrases that viewers couldn't stop repeating. ("Schwing!" "We're not worthy!" "That's what she said!") Yet behind the movie's blissful silliness lies a secret story of off-camera bitterness and strife that threatened to keep the film from partying on -- as you'll read below.

1. Myers created the Wayne Campbell character long before "SNL," when he was still in high school. He appeared as Wayne on various Canadian comedy series during the 1980s, including "It's Only Rock & Roll" (See clip below.)

"Wayne's Power Minute

2. By 1991, the popularity of the sketch had led to a greenlight for a movie at Paramount, but who would direct? Penelope Spheeris -- whose ties to "SNL" went back to the first season, when she helped Albert Brooks make his filmed sketches -- campaigned hard for the job. The daughter of a carnival owner and strong man, Spheeris had made a name for herself directing "The Decline of Western Civilization," a series of wry documentaries about rock musicians. She was working on a documentary about serial killers while pleading with Paramount and "SNL" guru Lorne Michaels for the change-of-pace gig.

3. According to a Vanity Fair expose published in 2000, Myers initially didn't want to take sketch co-star Dana Carvey along to play Garth on the big screen because he feared being upstaged by the more established comedian. Carvey has disputed that claim. Talking to Entertainment Weekly in 2008, Michaels said the tension between the two funnymen had been "overstated" but added, "That isn't to say they're not both comedians and that occasionally there's not some disagreement over who should be speaking what."

4. Before landing a starring role as Cassandra, Wayne's aspiring-rock star girlfriend, Tia Carrere had done a two-year stint on "General Hospital" and had made TV guest appearances on both action series and sitcoms. After bit parts in such testosterone-heavy movies as "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man" and "Showdown in Little Tokyo," she was offered a role on the hit show "Baywatch," but she turned it down to audition for "Wayne's World."

5. Rob Lowe, still seeking career rehab after his 1988 video sex scandal, played against type as a comic villain. The casting worked a little too well, and Lowe would spend the rest of the decade in similar parts, in "Tommy Boy" and all three of Myers' "Austin Powers" movies.

6. Lee Tergesen, who played Terry, Wayne and Garth's cameraman, made his film debut in "Wayne's World." Later, he'd become best known as one of the stars of HBO's "Oz."

7. Myers' girlfriend, Robin Ruzan, was cast as a waitress. They'd marry in 1993 and divorce in 2006.

8. Myers and Spheeris did not get along. Myers was a perfectionist who tended to lash out when he didn't get his way. Sometimes, that lashing out would take the form of petty tirades, such as excoriating an assistant for bringing him a bagel with butter instead of margarine. "He was emotionally needy and got more difficult as the shoot went along," Spheeris told Entertainment Weekly in 2008.

"Wayne's World" -- "Bohemian Rhapsody"

9. The famed "Bohemian Rhapsody" sequence, with Wayne and Garth and their pals driving around, lip-synching and headbanging to the classic Queen tune, marked an especially fractious moment between star and director. "You should have heard him bitching when I was trying to do that 'Bohemian Rhapsody' scene," Spheeris recalled to Entertainment Weekly. "'I can't move my neck like that! Why do we have to do this so many times? No one is going to laugh at that!'"

10. For his part, Myers had nothing but kind words for Spheeris, at least by 2008. He gave a statement to Entertainment Weekly, saying, "I'm incredibly grateful for Penelope Spheeris' contributions on 'Wayne's World.' Some 17 years later, the movie is still a bright highlight in my professional career."

11. One thing that was causing Myers anguish during production: his father's deteriorating health. Eric Myers had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1987 and died in late 1991, before "Wayne's World"'s first positive test screening. "Mike had this desire to make his father proud of him,'' said Deepak Chopra (a Myers friend), to Entertainment Weekly. ''I think one of his tragedies is that he was never able to do that because his father passed away before he became such a huge phenomenon.''

12. For all the turmoil on the set, filming took just 34 days.

"Wayne's World" -- Wayne and Garth Meet Alice Cooper

13. Gary Wright re-recorded his '70s track "Dream Weaver" for the film. The particular use of that song, cued up as a running gag whenever Wayne looks longingly at Cassandra, became a common cliché in movies whenever a guy would stare at a hot chick.

14. "Bosom Buddies" star Donna Dixon had a memorable role as Garth's dream girl. Except for a bit part in 1994's "Exit to Eden" (starring her husband, "SNL" alum Dan Aykroyd) and another cameo in Oliver Stone's "Nixon" as John Dean's wife Maureen, "Wayne's World" was her last major film role to date.

15. Upon its release, the movie's soundtrack shot to No. 1 on the Billboard chart. Spheeris shot a music video for "Bohemian Rhapsody," incorporating footage from "Wayne's World," and the song rocketed to No. 2 on the chart, some 16 years after its initial release, and just a few months after Queen frontman Freddie Mercury's death.

16. The movie cost a reported $14 million to make. It earned $122 million at the box office.

"Wayne's World" -- Trailer

17. Almost immediately, a sequel went into production. Myers, who had earned a reported $1 million to co-write and star in the first film, saw his fee nearly quadruple, to $3.5 million. Nonetheless, "Wayne's World 2" (1993) wasn't nearly as big a hit, topping out at $48 million.

18. "Wayne's World" had been the first movie based on an "SNL" sketch since 1980's "The Blues Brothers." Its success launched a wave of "SNL"-derived movies that lasted throughout the '90s, including such films as "Coneheads," "It's Pat: The Movie," "Stuart Saves His Family," "A Night at the Roxbury," "Blues Brothers 2000," "Superstar," and "The Ladies Man." To date, however, "Wayne's World" is by far the biggest hit of all "SNL" movies.

19. Myers was set to turn another one of his SNL characters, dour German "Sprockets" host Dieter, into a film, but in 2000, he pulled the plug on the project at the last minute, saying he didn't want to make a subpar movie based on an "unacceptable script" (even though he was the screenwriter). Universal sued him for $30 million, he countersued for $20 million, and the whole mess was settled with Myers agreeing to make another movie for the studio, which turned out to be 2003's dreadful "The Cat in the Hat."

20. "Wayne's World" spawned a Nintendo video game in which Wayne must travel through various Aurora, Illinois locations from the film in order to rescue Garth, who's trapped in the "Zoltar the Gelatinous Cube" arcade game referred to in the movie.

21. Spheeris had mixed feelings about the movie's success. "I spent so many years being told that I could not do a comedy because I'd done these dark, hard-edged pieces," she told the New York Times in 1992. "Now I've proved I can do a comedy. And now people are saying, 'I don't know if you can do anything with a serious edge to it.' Twenty years of that reputation just blown out of the water by one movie."

22. Indeed, Spheeris became the go-to director for TV comedy franchises being adapted into movies, first with "The Beverly Hillbillies," then "The Little Rascals." She also directed another "SNL"-related comedy, "Black Sheep," starring the sketch comedy show's Chris Farley and David Spade. But she also went back to documentaries, including another installment of "The Decline of Western Civilization."

23. She blamed Myers for keeping her from getting the job directing "Wayne's World 2," but Spheeris eventually made her peace with the comic after being blown away by his work in the "Austin Powers" movies. "You can be moody, you can be a jerk, you can be things that others of us can't be," she said of Myers, "because you are profoundly talented. And I forgive you."

24. Myers and Carvey reprised the characters twice more in recent years: once at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, and once on a February 2011 "SNL" episode hosted by Carvey. Talking to TMZ last month, Carvey joked he'd be up for making a third movie, provided that Wayne and Garth finally aged. "If they want, we can play 'em in their 50s," Carvey said. "'Wayne! My prostate's enlarged!'"

25. Having honed her reality-competition chops on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," Carrere will be seen vying for Donald Trump's favor on the new season of NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice," starting next week.

Picking up yesterday where we left off with Jon Chu at the American International Toy Fair, we now set our sights on Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," as well as the first film and the "Transformers" series. I'm a bit of a skeptic after the first film, the financially successful "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," failed to resemble anything that would remind one of, you know, G.I. Joe. In our discussion, di Bonaventura explains why that happened, further confirms that the Cobra Commander that we see in "Retaliation" is not the one that we saw in "Rise of Cobra," and hints at a possible return of Destro.

(Like yesterday, I will warn you: this is a very nerdy G.I. Joe discussion.)

When I was in 2nd grade, my parents bought me Grunt and Flash so I'd stop playing with "Star Wars" toys.
Grunt's in this movie. It's a small part, but, yeah.

I watch the trailer for this movie and I find myself getting excited. I did not feel the same way for the first movie.
Well [Laughs], I worked on both.

I know. That's why I'm glad you're here.
I think what happened is the first one, we were trying to do a lot of things. It's very hard to start a franchise -- and it succeeded at doing that. By and large, I think people thought it was a great ride. Stephen [Sommers] did not grow up a Joe fan and I think that's one of the big differences between the two movies: that Jon Chu did. He knows those characters inside and out. And when he came in to first meet with me, he was rattling off all the stuff -- he knew the most intimate details of things.

Was there any thought of just starting over?
No. I never thought about that. It's not a reboot; it's an evolution. First of all, there are characters from the first one: Jonathan Pryce is back, Lee Byung-hun is back...

And Zartan.
Zartan, yeah. And Snake Eyes. So you've got four characters. Am I forgetting anybody else? I think that's it. So it's an interesting hybrid.

How did you decide what characters to bring back? Obviously Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow is a no-brainer.
Well, the first time there was a big debate between Duke and Flint-- I'm sorry, Channing Tatum is in the movie as well. I keep forgetting. So in the first movie we debated between Flint and Duke to be the lead. And Heavy Duty and Roadblock was a big debate, now we've got Roadblock. And Jon has his favorites -- he loves Grunt. And there are a few other Joe surprises. Some names of enterprises that Joe fans will recognize and non-Joe fans will have no idea of. There are quite a few Easter eggs.

I know Joseph Gordon-Levitt is not in this movie. But is the Cobra Commander in this movie the same character we saw in the first movie?
No.

So it's a different guy?
Different guy.

So someone else took over?
Someone else took over, yes.

I never understood his costume from the first film. I saw the "he would look like he's from the Ku Klux Klan" excuse...
Which he did.

The hooded version. But not the version with the face shield helmet. I was confused why that costume wasn't used.
Well, you know what. The first one suffered from one thing a lot: which was we had no time to make it. They green lit the movie and we were shooting ten weeks later. That's insane. In this movie we were designing things seven months before we shot. So when you have no time to do anything, your first design comes through. Literally, Storm Shadow's costume, we never saw it until it showed up on set.

For the new film, was there any thought of bringing back Destro. He's a popular character. Even if Christopher Eccleston didn't want to come back, it wouldn't matter now that he has the mask, right?
Umm [smiles]...

You're smiling. There's something going on.
Yeah, there is. But, Destro, you'll see Destro again. You'll see Destro again. For sure. If not in this one, perhaps in another one. You'll see.

How do you get the G.I. Joe fans back who feel burned after the first film?
Well, there are people like you... well, it's pretty evenly split. There are some people who feel as strongly as you and there are some who feel like, "Well, it wasn't really that, but I enjoyed it." Look, you learn a lot the first time out. Did it not take itself seriously enough? Was that part of the problem? Because, for me, these movies are about tone.

I would say that's part of the problem. And the people who grew up with the Larry Hama comic books like a more serious tone, for the most part, as opposed to the cartoon.
And we tried to fuse the two, which is always tricky. Jon grew up with it. So he owns it in a way that you can't learn it in the way that he owns it. So I think you'll find the authenticity to be very close to what you think. And everybody has their own interpretation, so I don't think anybody can do it all the way for everybody. But I think you'll say, "That's the Joe I know." Did you like Firefly?

Yes.
He's so good in the movie.

For people like me, yeah, I want to see Firefly.
So, like Jon, one of the first things he said was, "We have to figure out Firefly." And I'm like, "OK. We'll figure out Firefly."

Consider Whit Stillman the hipster version of Terrence Malick. Best known for the seminal '90s films "Metropolitan" and "Barcelona," Stillman hasn't directed a feature since "The Last Days of Disco" in 1998. He returns this spring with "Damsels in Distress," a college-set comedy starring your crush du jour, Greta Gerwig. The first trailer for "Damsels" has arrived and it's...kinda great? Kinda awful? Definitely interesting? Tough to say! Ahead, some pros and cons about the "Damsels in Distress" trailer.

PRO: Pink Sony Classics logo
PRO: Greta Gerwig and Analeigh Tipton; you love them!
CON: Those screaming frat guys? This isn't a "PCU" remake, right?
PRO: That thing Gerwig says about people seeking someone cooler than themselves.
CON: The suicide prevention center joke.
CON: The lighting around Gerwig when she's talking about tap dancing.
PRO: Aubrey Plaza!
CON: "Part Woody Allen, all deadpan hilarity." Who says that?
PRO: Adam Brody!
PRO: Dude is charming.
CON: This kinda seems like "Clueless," but without the satirical wit.
CON: "Cocktails. Hard liqour and spirits. That's what gives you a lift."
PRO: "Playboy operator."
PRO: DANCING!
PRO: The heartbreaking way Gerwig says she's never seen love before.

With a final tally of nine, the PROS have won! Looks like "Damsels in Distress" will be worth seeing. Probably.

"Damsels in Distress" is out in New York and Los Angeles on April 6.

Chris Pine may need Scotty's help to get out of this mess. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actor is being sued by his former talent agency, which says it was denied millions of dollars in commission.

The lawsuit, brought forth by SDB Partners, states that the agency helped Pine secure roles in "Star Trek," its subsequent sequel, the upcoming action flick "This Means War," a planned reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise, and a whole host of other projects. Pine allegedly stopped paying SDB the standard 10 percent commission after he dropped them.

The suit also includes the alleged salaries Pine received on each of his projects. For "Star Trek 2," his deal gives him $1.5 million plus up to $500,000 in backend compensation, and $3 million plus the $500,000 in backend if a third "Star Trek" happens. Pine was paid $3 million for "Unstoppable" and $5 million for "This Means War." Then on the planned Jack Ryan feature, the actor's deal was $4 million for the first flick, $8 million for the second and $12 million for a third. SDB is looking for commission on all of them.

If the lawsuit weren't bad enough for Pine, the THR story also discusses the way in which the "Star Trek" actor went about dispensing his former agency via email -- which is a bit ironic considering that Chris stayed put with SDB even after "Star Trek" came out, stating that, "I'm a firm believer in loyalty. At the end of the day, this is a business, and you are a business, and I have felt in my career it has served me to stay with the people who started with me because I believe they're as passionate and as dedicated as they've ever been."

Pine left SBD in November of 2011.

You can read more about the lawsuit over on THR.

For many people, Valentine's Day means curling up with some of the greatest romantic movies of all-time and having a good cry. Which basically means you're probably going to watch "Titanic" at some point during the next 24 hours, and relive the doomed romance of Jack and Rose. Those crazy kids would have made it -- if it weren't for that damned iceberg!

If you foolishly don't have a copy of "Titanic" within arm's reach at the moment, don't worry: Paramount is set to re-release the biggest romance of all-time this April for a limited 3D run. Even better? In honor of Valentine's Day, the studio will screen "Titanic" in 3D at select theaters tonight, where fans can enter for a chance to win a trip to the 3D premiere.
"War Horse"

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing

What's It About: The Narracotts are a farming family struggling to survive in the pre-WWI era. Stubborn father Ted purchases a horse (Joey) up for auction, and his son Albert is smitten almost immediately. The two develop a special bond as Joey grows. Then the unthinkable happens: Ted sells Joey to the war effort, and he's shipped to the front lines. Albert makes it his life mission to reunite with Joey, no matter what the cost.

Why You Should See It: If you're a Steven Spielberg fan and you like dramatic, wholesome, feel-good stories, then this is the movie for you. As you can probably tell from the nominations, the film is beautiful and a real feast for the eyes. With the exception of one particularly tough-to-watch scene, "War Horse" is an ode to the expansive pastures of the UK, a revealing look at the harshness of war, and a story of the love between man and beast.

It's Kind of Like: "Secretariat," but replace horse racing with war, and Diane Lane with Jeremy Irvine.

http://news.moviefone.com/2012/02/14/nicolas-cage-ghost-rider_n_1276535.html#comments

Being alone in a room with Nicolas Cage was, to say the least, surreal. Not because of his star power, nor for any lifelong adulation that I may have had for him. No, it stems from the fact that, somewhere along the line, my subconscious started to believe that Nic Cage is a fictional character. It's as if I'd been assigned to interview Snoopy. But there he was, in the flesh. I had expected to find a man with his guard held high, perhaps saying a lot but, in the process, saying nothing. What I found was a man who was reserved -- that's for sure -- but at the same time strikingly revealing, considering our short time together.

In "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," Cage once again plays Johnny Blaze, as he did in the first "Ghost Rider" film. What makes the sequel interesting is that, well, it's not a sequel. The events of the first film never happened in the second film -- though Cage still plays the doomed title character who has an evil-hunting demon inside of him, transforming him at times into the Ghost Rider. Over the course of our interview, Cage discussed what it's like to play a character that urinates fire, why his career is like Led Zeppelin, how he almost wound up in "Dumb and Dumber," and why "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was a terrible experience that led him to change his last name.

At least this isn't on camera.
Is it not on camera? Let's get out of these lights. These lights are obnoxious. OK, now, let's talk.

That is better.
Much better.

This "Ghost Rider" movie is technically a reboot, not a sequel. So, what didn't you like about the first movie that you wanted to change with this one?
It's not a sequel. And you're leading the witness a little bit, because I did like "Ghost Rider." I did.

I didn't mean that you didn't like the entire first movie, but what did you want to change from the first movie?
Well, what you said was, "What didn't I like about the first one?" And the truth is, I liked the first one. I feel that I achieved what I wanted with Mark Steven Johnson in "Ghost Rider." I wanted to create a kind of Walt Disney, Faust tale that you can take the whole family to. But, with "Spirit of Vengeance," it was very important to [directors] Neveldine and Taylor that we really augment the horror aspect of the character. And I think in this movie, the people that want to see an edgy Ghost Rider and an edgy John Blaze will get what they want. There's a cynicism and an irony and a sarcasm to Blaze, after living with the curse for eight years, that has taken a toll on his state of mind. And, also, Neveldine and Taylor invited me to play the Ghost Rider himself in this film, which I hadn't done before.

Was that fun?
Oh, yeah!

It does look a lot different than what we saw in the first film.
Yeah, and there's very little CGI.

It's just the face, right?
It's just the face and some heat on the jacket. But you can see that all of the actors are really there. And that gives it kind of a rawness and a visceral quality that Neveldine and Taylor's movies have.

So in the first one, did you feel left out when the Ghost Rider was on screen?
Yeah. I wanted to be a part of it. And I wanted to use my body language to convey, hopefully, an aura that you could look at and not really understand. I wanted him to have kind of a ancient dignity, but, also, a movement like an animal.

My dad owned some "Ghost Rider" comics, which I read when I was six years old -- they were scary at that age. How old were you when you first read "Ghost Rider"?
Well, "Ghost Rider" came out in 1972. And I had the first issue and I was eight. And it really blew my thought process because I couldn't get my head around how something that terrifying, who was using the forces of evil, could also be good. I'm looking at this flaming skull on a bike and it was like a philosophical awakening for an eight-year-old because it's so complicated.

There's a scene in this movie where the Ghost Rider urinates flames.
Yeah.

Was that your doing?
No, I had nothing to do with it. That was Neveldine and Taylor. And I knew, having seen their work, that they were capable of going into a pop-art, lowbrow spectrum -- all the way to the sublime. Kind of like a Robert Williams painting. And I knew there was going to be some moment in this movie that would have that signature, I just didn't know what form. And then when I read the script, I thought, Oh, boy. Here we go. This is it. Really, man? I'm really going to be peeing fire in a movie? Am I really going to have the guts to go on record with that? And then I said, "Well, it's a Neveldine and Taylor movie and I have to be a part of the club." And I just did it.

There's a similar theme to "Superman II" in this movie, with Ghost Rider giving up his powers. Did that thought cross your mind?
I didn't make that comparison, but I did wonder, "Do we really want to see Blaze lose his powers?" I was always a little nervous about that.

Why?
Because I didn't want him to seem castrated in any way. I wanted him to stay strong and powerful. But the movie works, also, because he gives it up and ... well, I don't want to give too much away.

Would you trade these two "Ghost Rider" movies for that chance to play Superman that almost happened?
No. No. Look, I would love to work with Tim Burton. I think we would be very good together. And I think he knew it at the time and so did I. But we were both the victims of a very unfortunate studio bureaucracy. So it didn't work out. But I'm not upset about it, because I do genuinely think that Ghost Rider is a better match for me. And I think Ghost Rider had more of an effect on me, even as a child. I didn't read "Superman" comics. That wasn't my hero of choice. I liked the monsters. I'm enthusiastic about the character of Superman simply because of what he represents in terms of the American invention that is comic books -- that has changed the world, literally. Without Action Comics No. 1, it never would have happened. He is the beginning. Without Superman, there would be no Ghost Rider. But the comic that affected me was Ghost Rider, because I liked the monsters and I felt sorry for the Hulk and the Ghost Rider. And I was much more of a Marvel enthusiast than a DC enthusiast.

I love the scene in "Peggy Sue Got Married" when you're on stage singing with Jim Carrey.
[Laughs] Yeah.

That's a surreal scene now, knowing where both of your careers went.
Yeah, yeah ...

You two should do a movie together.
You know, we don't really speak so much anymore. We used to be very close.

I didn't know that.
Not that there's anything wrong. We just fell out of conversation -- who knows why?

So when you look back at that scene ...
Well, we talked at length about trying to do a movie together. In fact, he wanted me to be in "Dumb and Dumber" with him. And then I wanted to do a much smaller movie instead called "Leaving Las Vegas."

That worked out well for you.
Yeah. So that didn't happen, but I've always admired his abilities.

You mention "Leaving Las Vegas." Is winning another Oscar important to you? Or is it now more, "Well, I did that. Now I just do what I'm going to do"?
It's not important to me. In fact, I think that if you go about making movies to win Oscars, you're really going about it the wrong way. I think that it's ... right now, what I'm excited about is trying to create a [pauses] kind of a cultural understanding through my muse that is part of the zeitgeist that isn't motivated by vanity or magazine covers or awards. It's more, not countercultural, but counter-critical. I would like to find a way to embrace what Led Zeppelin did, in filmmaking.

That's an interesting way to put it.
Do you know what I mean? They did no press, you know?

And "Stairway to Heaven" wasn't even a single.
Yeah! And they were the biggest band in the world and they remained intimately mysterious -- because they just went about it their own way, or against what the advice might have been or what the council might have been. And I admire that. And I would like to tap into more exploration of horror films and just everything that I shouldn't be doing, according to representation.

One of your first roles was in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Was that a good experience?
No. It was a terrible experience.

Really?
Yeah. Terrible. Because I must have auditioned for the Judge Reinhold part 10 or 11 times. I was underage, so I couldn't get it because I couldn't work as many hours. And I was surrounded by actors, whose names I won't mention, who were not very open to the idea of a young guy named "Coppola" being an actor. So that movie was instrumental in me changing my name because of the kind of unfortunate responses to my last name.

So they held that against you?
Yeah. They would congregate outside my trailer and say things, like quoting lines from "Apocalypse Now," and it made it very hard for me to believe in myself. So it wasn't until I auditioned for "Valley Girl" -- where Martha Coolidge did not know who I was. I had already changed my name to Cage and I had this weight come off my body and I went, "Wow, I really can do this." And I felt liberated by that experience. And you can see it in "Valley Girl" that I'm free. Whereas in "Fast Times," or even "Rumble Fish," I'm somewhat stuck.

Well, regardless of what they said, I feel things worked out for you.
[Laughs] Well, thank you.

"Pina"

Nominated For: Best Documentary Film

What's It About: Director Wim Wenders ("Paris, Texas," "Wings of Desire") tells the story of Pina Bausch, an acclaimed German dance choreographer and instructor. During her lifetime, Bausch innovated the world of interpretative dance by having her performers interact with elaborate sets using natural and urban terrains. Originally, Bausch was to take part in the documentary on her work, but she passed away from cancer just two days before Wenders was to start the shoot. Urged on by her dancers to complete the project, Wenders films her most celebrated works on the streets of Germany and on a stage filled with waterfalls, sand and the wild elements of earth. And he shot it all in 3D.

Why You Should See It: "Pina" eschews the characteristics of a regular documentary and presents the famed choreographer's story in a manner that could almost be described as spiritual. Her recent passing hangs over the movie, but not as a dreary funeral wake; it gives her dance troupe the passion to deliver a final explosive celebration of her life, her work and her beliefs where words are not necessary. The impact she had on her performers is inspirational, and being able to witness her creativity in action -- with genuinely hypnotic 3D techonlogy -- is the best tribute possible to a unique artistic identity. Lastly, It's a German 3D dance film. If you're not at least enticed on a visual level, we're not sure what to tell you.

It's Kind Of Like: The intimacy of "The Mystery of Picasso" meets the visual creativity of "Fantasia" with the energy of "Hellzapoppin."

How You Can See It: It's currently playing in select theaters around the country. Check the movie's Facebook page for a complete listing of screenings.

See It Because: Steve James films some incredibly real moments of hope and despair, and while the film feels epic in scope, it hits hardest when you realize that these events are just another day for everyone involved.

Sometimes Valentine's Day is better spent at home than at a fancy restaurant -- particularly if it falls on a school night (like this year), and you have small kids. Yet that doesn't mean you can't celebrate your love with a swoon-worthy evening featuring dinner and a movie.

The problem is that many couples usually can't agree on what constitutes a love story. Maybe one of you likes understated Merchant-Ivory dramas and the other hates anything with period costumes. Never fear! Moviefone is here to hook you up with a movie queue of film picks that are sure to get you both in a romantic mood.

(You'll have to consult our colleagues at HuffPost Food for culinary inspiration, though!)

Our own Mike Ryan may be "so over" Uggie from "The Artist," but plenty of others are waiting with baited breath for the adorable Jack Russell terrier to perform with host Billy Crystal at the 84th Annual Academy Awards.

The treat of the evening's mysterious man-and-canine choreography has been dangled in front of our faces long enough -- which is why Moviefone asked three professional dog trainers what routine they'd orchestrate for Uggie and Billy on Oscar night. (And how they'd teach both man and dog the sketch!)

You'll have to wait until Sunday, February 26 to find out if any of these predictions ring apropos - until then, enjoy the mental imagery.

"I think it would be fun for Uggie to show off his artistic skills, given that he's in 'The Artist.' There is a fun trick called Paintbrush Painting that he could do at the beginning. Uggie takes a brush from a paint can and touches it to an easel to create art. Billy could comment on how talented he is as an artist while Uggie puts the brush back in the can and proceeds to 'dance' around on his hind legs and show off his dancing skills. Billy could then start asking Uggie questions about the making of the film. At this point, Uggie seems distracted and goes to sit in front of a mirror (maybe on a chaise lounge or something). Billy says, 'Hey - I'm talking to you!' Uggie releases two barks and his hair and makeup people come out - one with a brush, maybe a manicurist, too. Billy could end the segment by saying something like, 'Ahh, his true artistic talent lies as an actor. I think he's got it down pat, don't you?'

The best part! Uggie's 'artwork' could be signed by Billy Crystal and auctioned off after the Oscars for charity!" -- Kim Mayes, CTDI

"My favorite skits are the ones where important people get bested by mischievous dogs. I can picture Uggie swiping Billy's cue card or reading glasses and running up a ladder to dangle them just out of Billy's reach.

The neat thing about trained dogs is that they can pick up new behaviors very quickly. Uggie would only need a day of prep time to learn to swipe the object and take it to the top of the ladder. But what differentiates a dog doing a trick from a real dog actor is the subtleties. Most dogs would simply stand at the top of the ladder holding the reading glasses. But a good dog actor would subtly lower his head toward Billy, and right as Billy jumps for the glasses the dog would go 'yoink!' and pull his head back.

To achieve this advanced behavior, we take advantage of a little dog psychology. You've probably been 'yoinked' at some point by your own dog, when you reached for his favorite toy in his mouth. Dogs get possessive when they really like the object they are holding. I'd wrap a little piece of hot dog in plastic and tape it to the glasses. The dog will smell the treat, but not be able to eat it. He'll really want to keep possession of this valuable object!" -- Kyra Sundance, author of "101 Dog Tricks"

"What if both rolled onto stage on skateboards? I've taught all my dogs to skateboard - they can even push it with one leg off and three on the board. Basically, I put the board out and any attention that they pay to it, I reinforce with a cookie. I like using a marker like a clicker or by saying 'yes' to tell them that what they did was right - followed by a treat. Initially, they touch the board, then move to putting one foot on, then two, and so on. So they could roll out, even flip the board to roll away from them - followed by a high five. Then I'd have them both take a bow - easy to teach with a lure: Put the cookie in front of Uggie's nose, bring it down and when his elbows hit the ground, that's the 'yes.'

Next, if Billy Crystal was going to be talking about the movie or explaining something, I'd have Uggie sitting by him, looking very interested, but ever so slowly lying down - looking bored, then more bored, and finally sleeping on his back with his feet in the air. Or go out of sight, come back with glasses and a newspaper and sit down and 'read' the paper. Then maybe have Billy Crystal say something like, 'Okay, Uggie - let's go grab dinner!' - which would be a cue to have him grab a bowl and follow Billy off stage.

Note: It's much easier to train dogs than men!" -- Becky Hutchins, certified dog trainer and teacher at Nassau Veterinary Clinic in Nassau, NY

No doubt: it's been a very good year for both these stars.

And much as I admire Jean Dujardin's sublime performance in The Artist, my hunch is that the industry will favor one of its own on Oscar night.

So who will it be -- George or Brad?

I'm saving my prediction for a later Oscar piece, but for now simply want to consider these actors' respective contributions, leading up to and including 2011.

And you'll note I say "actors," because one thing this past year confirmed was that both these handsome, movie-idol type personalities can, in fact, really act.

Some will claim they've always known it, but for me this was a pretty striking discovery. Too often Pitt and Clooney have been constrained by their leading man status to playing cool, heroic protagonists who save the day and get the girl. And they appear to be playing themselves. (Sometimes even on the same screen, as in Ocean's 11.)

Of course, this approach tends to work well at the box office, but does not leave more critical viewers with a true appreciation of the stars' actual acting range.

Still, as their respective careers progressed, both men used their clout (and advancing ages) to insist on more offbeat roles that would stretch their talents on-screen.

Prior to 2011, I think Pitt was somewhat more successful in registering his versatile acting chops in his films. I've always sensed a certain sameness to Clooney -- a slick, cocky quality that was hard for him to leave behind. And when he did, it felt forced.

Example: I felt he was miscast in as producer Fred Friendly in the over-stylized Good Night and Good Luck from 2005. I'd met the real Friendly, and trust me, he was nowhere to be seen in Clooney's performance.

That's why his work in The Descendants is such a revelation. Almost for the first time, George brings off the role of a vulnerable, imperfect, struggling, suffering human being. I liked this man, and more important, I cared about him.

Whatever one may think of the film overall (I loved it), I find it harder to understand those who don't recognize this as Clooney's best work to-date.

As for Brad, personally I think he's being nominated for the wrong movie -- the one that shows him playing the movie star (the overrated Moneyball) rather than the actor (The Tree Of Life).

True, stars often win Oscars for past roles or their body of work rather than for the performance they're actually nominated for. Think Elizabeth Taylor for 1960's Butterfield 8, or nearly a decade later, John Wayne for True Grit.

Coincidentally, Clooney and Pitt are each up for two Oscars this year: in addition to their acting nods, Clooney is nominated for screenplay (The Ides Of March) and Pitt for picture (as producer of Moneyball).

Clooney has been nominated a total of seven times (four acting, one directing, two screenplay nods) and won once for his role in Syriana (2005). Pitt has received four nods, all for acting, besides this year's producer's credit. He has yet to take home an Oscar.

So which way will it go? I'll reveal my own hunch in a week's time. Meanwhile, I'd love to hear what you think.

As we all debate and wonder, here are just a few of my own favorite Pitt and Clooney titles, available on DVD.

Seven (1995)- A week before his retirement from the homicide division in an urban police department, world-weary Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) finds himself on the tail of an ingenious serial killer whose grisly murders are inspired by the seven deadly sins. Adding to his stress is cocksure newbie David Mills (Pitt), who's joined the unit as Somerset's replacement after persuading his reluctant young wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) to move back to the city. At first, neither lawman realizes how madly brilliant the sermonizing psycho is, or how much pursuing this case to the end will ultimately cost them. Crackling with suspense and an almost unbearably persistent tension, David Fincher's Seven plunges us into the murky underside of a nightmarish, rainy, unnamed city, where two detectives at opposite ends of their respective careers are drawn into the darkest corners of their own consciousness. Pitt and Freeman, representing modes of innocence and experience, arrogance and wisdom, are perfectly matched, and Fincher's neo-noir style further builds the film's psychological intensity. Edgy, bleak, and unforgettable, Seven ranks with Silence of the Lambs as one of the most harrowing policiers of the '90s.

Out Of Sight (1998)- Handsome, suave career bank robber Jack Foley (Clooney) escapes from a Florida prison, only to be nabbed by gorgeous federal marshal Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez). Foley's partner Buddy (Ving Rhames) intervenes, however, and the crafty convict squirms away, but not before he and Sisco have a long, overheated ride in the trunk of a car. While both fantasize about their mutual attraction, priorities prevail: Jack plans a major diamond heist, and Sisco checks up on his former associates and kooky ex-wife (Catherine Keener) hoping to smoke him out. Mining the risqué wit and edgy, intricate plotting of Elmore Leonard's novel, this cool, stylish crime-caper romance by Steven Soderbergh is designed solely for one purpose: to entertain. Clooney, trying to escape bush-league fame on TV's ER, projects all the bad-boy self-confidence and irresistible charm that would soon make him a movie star. Lopez is tough but alluring too, a sultry match for Clooney's charismatic, calculating Foley. Strong support from Keener, Rhames, Dennis Farina, Albert Brooks, Luis Guzman, and especially Don Cheadle (as a psychotic inmate) keep things rolling. Don't let this funky heist flick Out of Sight.

Snatch (2000)- Seedy British boxing promoters Turkish (Jason Statham) and Tommy (Stephen Graham) team up with Irish Gypsy pugilist Mickey (Pitt) to throw a fight organized by crazed mobster Brick Top (Alan Ford). Their paths eventually cross with Franky Four Fingers (Benicio del Toro), a Jewish gangster who's transporting a stolen 84-carat diamond to New York, and dangerous Russian hoodlum Boris the Blade (Rade Sherbedgia), for whom Franky's placed a bet on the fixed fight. Guy Ritchie's kinetic, ultra-stylish heist film is an amalgam of all the best caper films, rolled out with a punk attitude and bristling Cockney accent. The plot is outrageous but loads of fun (wait until a certain dog swallows a squeaky toy), and the ensemble cast -- Statham, Graham, Del Toro, Ford, and Sherbedgia -- may not all be household names, but their fiercely funny performances will stay etched in your mind. Nearly stealing the show is Pitt, playing a crooked bruiser whose Gaelic brogue is hilariously incomprehensible to everyone. Snatch this punchy, black-humored romp through London's criminal underbelly-before someone else does.

O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000)- In Depression-era Mississippi, three convicts -- smooth-talking con man Everett (Clooney), anxious nutcase Pete (John Turturro), and dim-witted rube Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) -- manage to escape a chain gang, then go on a soul-running, picaresque quest for $1.2 million in hidden cash. Keeping ahead of the law, they encounter bible salesmen and Klansmen, prophets and river sirens, and even manage to record a hit song, all while Everett tries to win back his soon-to-be-remarried wife (Holly Hunter). A wacky cross between "Ulysses" and "Sullivan's Travels," the Coens' stylized slapstick adventure is packed with loopy dialogue, smart visual gags, and plenty of sly cultural references (legendary gangster Baby Face Nelson and sold-his-soul-to-the-devil blues musician Robert Johnson are among the colorful Southern characters the fugitives meet on the road). O Brother is a comic caricature of 1930s Mississippi and its milieu seen through a mythic lens. Terrific support from John Goodman, Charles Durning (as a Southern politico), and Hunter round out a superbly offbeat cast, while Alison Kraus and T-Bone Burnett provide the grace note with their old-timey soundtrack.

Michael Clayton (2007)- New York City lawyer Michael Clayton (Clooney) is a "fixer" for a big firm, cleaning up the dirty messes his high-paying clients leave behind, but lately he's been feeling burned out and disillusioned. Things come to a head for Clayton when his guilt-ridden friend, ace lawyer Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson), decides to blow the whistle on a corporate client's massive wrongdoing, thereby threatening his career, his sanity, even his life. One of the thorniest and most celebrated legal thrillers in years, Clayton marks the directorial debut of Bourne trilogy screenwriter Tony Gilroy, whose film is distinguished by intelligent dialogue, meticulous pacing, and plenty of riveting tension. A-lister Clooney adopts a quieter, less showy pose as a troubled lawyer torn between his loyalty to firm honcho Sydney Pollack and his pal Wilkinson, who gives an astounding performance as an erratic, manic-depressive lawyer at the breaking point. As you'd expect, the no-nonsense Swinton is superb as the offending Client's top lawyer (she won an Oscar for this). Director Gilroy handles all the intrigue -- a cover-up, then a murder -- with cold efficiency, but catharsis does arrive in the final scene.

The Tree Of Life (2011)- Terence Malick's latest film is an enigmatic, often profound meditation on nature, innocence, love and faith, experienced largely through the lens of one American family. In a 1950s Texas suburb, Mr. O'Brien (Pitt) and Mrs. O'Brien (Jessica Chastain) raise three sons, teaching them to be good, honorable Christian men. But the family has problems: Mr. O'Brien is a moody, rigid disciplinarian, burdening his sons with his fixation on ambition and masculine ideals. In particular, the eldest boy, Jack (Hunter McCracken), struggles with conflicting feelings about his powerful Dad, and finds various ways to act out and rebel. Later, the grown-up Jack (Sean Penn) embarks on a spiritual quest to understand his painful childhood, the sudden death of his younger brother, and his fractured adulthood. Book-ending the family narrative are sequences portraying both the origin of the universe, and the afterlife. Epic, ambitious, and highly unconventional, some viewers struggled with this autobiographical, long-gestating magnum opus from Malick. Though the director perhaps falls short in making his more abstract, existential sequences cohere with the central story, this barely detracts from the film's blinding impact. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, Tree is at once visually astonishing and emotionally resonant: its uncanny sense of place and stunning, sun-drenched cinematography evoke those achingly familiar, elusive small moments that give texture and flavor to our daily lives. The lovely Jessica Chastain's career was launched here, but both she and Penn feel slightly underused. Rather, it's Pitt (in the performance of his career) and the young McCracken who make this daring work of genius soar. Branch out and experience this controversial film for yourself.

In September 2010, Fox picked up sequel rights to the drama "Waiting to Exhale." However, despite Houston's death over the weekend, plans for "Exhale 2" aren't in peril. According to Vulture, the studio plans on making the movie without Whitney.

"I don't think she would want it to [not happen]," Elizabeth Gabler, president of Fox 2000 Pictures said. "It's almost in her honor that we think to soldier on ... This [movie] was the biggest barrier-buster for color lines."

The inevitable question now is who will take over Houston's role. Gabler cautiously floated Oprah Winfrey's name as a potential replacement, only to add that, "We literally have not talked about anybody for that part. Forest [Whitaker, who directed the first movie], I know, is just ... grieving. He'd been the one who was speaking with her, updating [Houston] on its progress."

There is no current timetable in terms of a release date for "Waiting to Exhale 2." The original film -- based on Terry McMillan's bestselling novel -- starred Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine, as four friends who deal with relationships and life.

"After 'The Bodyguard,' I think Hollywood saw me as they did Streisand, when Streisand was first coming out: 'We can hire her for the movie, but we need her to sing,'" Houston said about her acting in a 1996 interview. "I didn't plan it. Like doing '[Waiting to] Exhale,' I didn't want to sing at all. I just wanted to act."

"Waiting to Exhale" earned over $80 million worldwide after its release in 1995. The sequel would be based on McMillan's "Exhale" follow-up, "Getting to Happy."

Taylor Swift isn't Katniss Everdeen, but she plays her on TV and the Internet. After performing at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night with a wardrobe and hairstyle that seemed very District 12-y, Swift has taken her Katniss love to the next level in the new video for "Safe & Sound," her lead track off the "Hunger Games" companion album.

Dressed in plain clothes and walking through a dystopian (and burning; thanks FX budget!) landscape, Swift sings the mournful tune with the help of The Civil Wars. The whole thing looks like "Cold Mountain" by way of "Children of Men," which is kinda awesome. More awesome? When Swift finds a Mockingjay pin of her very own.

Emma Watson, Guillermo Del Toro Team For 'Beauty And The Beast'

Sometimes it takes Hollywood a little while to catch up with the Internet. Per Variety, Guillermo del Toro is set to direct a new version of "Beauty and the Beast," with "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson in "final negotiations" for the lead role.

Titled "Beast," the film -- which Variety describes as an update on the classic fairy tale -- will be written by Andrew Davies, of "Bridget Jones's Diary" fame. (Fingers crossed Watson says something like this: "Will find nice sensible boyfriend and stop forming romantic attachments to any of the following: beasts, monsters, gargoyles, trolls...")

If all this sounds familiar, that's probably because you remember Watson and Del Toro were reportedly attached to this project back in July, right around the time when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" was breaking box-office records. Coming Soon had the first report then, after producer Denise Di Novi spilled the beans during press rounds for "Crazy Stupid Love."

In addition to "Beast," Watson has taken full advantage of being free from the knit sweaters of Hermione Granger. She's leading "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (out later this year), and may team with "Potter" director David Yates for an adaptation of "Your Voice In My Head," about a suicidal New York woman and the cancer-stricken therapist who saves her life.
