'Legends of the Fall'
This macho tearjerker about two generations of Montana-bred veterans pulls no punches in its distaste for war. Civil War vet Anthony Hopkins is adamant that his sons not ruin their lives and risk death by fighting in World War I. The three boys go off and fight anyway, out of naïve notions of duty and honor. One is killed, and the other two never get over it; neither does Dad or the woman that all three loved. Alfred (Aidan Quinn) becomes a respectable businessman and politician, while Tristan (Brad Pitt) drops out and goes on a worldwide search for self-annihilation, but both are subject to larger forces beyond their control -- painful memories, sexual jealousy, the still raw and untamed West, the currents of history, and the violence of human nature.
