Best New Kid Actor: Joel Courtney, 'Super 8'

Director J.J. Abrams searched high and low for a boy with the right combination of sweetness and steel to anchor his Spielbergian alien adventure. He found him in Courtney, a churchgoing teen from Idaho who proved able to hold his own opposite a Fanning sister without coming across as a creepy mini-adult.
