Back to Family Film Guide: Holiday Movies 2011
'Hugo'
Warner Bros.
Opening: Nov. 23
Who's In It?: Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield
What's It About?: Based on the illustrated children's novel 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret,' this whimsical 3-D adventure follows a 1930s orphan (Butterfield) who lives in a Paris train station, where he discovers a mysterious automaton, an eccentric toymaker (Kingsley), and a life-changing secret. It's directed by Martin Scorsese, who's cutting his teeth on a family film.
Who Will Enjoy It?: Tweens -- although the book skews more toward boys than girls. Plus, anyone who loves Scorsese. The director of 'Raging Bull,' 'Goodfellas' and 'The Departed' switches gears to transport us to the magical world of Paris, trains, toys, and orphans? Sweet. The book is amazing, and if Scorsese can channel even a fraction of author-illustrator Brian Selznick's wonder and mystery, the movie should be a holiday must-see.
