National Society of Film Critics Winners: 'Social Network' Makes Another Friend

'The Social Network' added another critics' prize to its growing list of kudos, winning the National Society of Film Critics award for Best Picture and begging the question, what's more popular: Facebook, or the Facebook movie?

In addition to Best Picture, 'The Social Network' also picked up awards for Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Director (David Fincher) and Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin).

The rest of the awards were a mix of names both familiar, with Geoffrey Rush winning the Best Supporting Actor prize for 'The King's Speech,' and less well known, with Italian actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno being recognized for her lead role in 'Vincere.' Another surprise came with Olivia Williams's beating out Amy Adams, Melissa Leo and Jacki Weaver for Best Actress for her role in Roman Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer.'

'The Social Network' Awarded Top Prize by L.A. Film Critics

'The Social Network' sure is friending a lot of critics.

On Sunday, David Fincher's drama about the founding of Facebook added the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Best Picture award to its growing mantel of critics' prizes, having been awarded the same prize by the Boston Society of Film Critics earlier in the day (and the National Board of Review earlier this month).

Fincher also picked up the L.A. critics' Best Director award, sharing the honor with Olivier Assayas, director of the multi-part biopic 'Carlos' (which won the award for foreign-language film). Aaron Sorkin joined in the 'Network' love, winning the prize for Best Screenplay.

'The Beaver' Trailer: Mel Gibson Talks to the Hand (Puppet)

'The Beaver,' in which Mel Gibson plays a man who attempts to break out of his lethargy by communicating with the world via a beaver puppet, may seem like an odd comeback vehicle for the actor. On the other hand, given the amount of buzz the movie -- directed by and co-starring Jodie Foster -- has been generating, it could be exactly what Gibson needs to resurrect his career.

And now, the first official trailer for the film has just hit the web -- and it's a doozy, as they say. Check it out after the jump.

Lindsay Lohan Fired From Linda Lovelace Biopic -- Malin Akerman to Replace Her

Lindsay Lohan Update: Deadline Hollywood reports that Malin Akerman ('Watchmen,' 'Couples Retreat,' '27 Dresses') has been confirmed as Lohan's replacement.

Lindsay Lohan's star turn in the Linda Lovelace biopic 'Inferno' looked as if it could mark the troubled actress's professional comeback. But instead, after waiting months for her to emerge from rehab, 'Inferno' director Matthew Wilder now tells E! Online he has dropped Lohan from the project.

Earlier this month, Wilder indicated to Moviefone that he was dedicated to making the film with Lohan. "She'll finish her rehab and get out and, you know, life will go on," he said. "So, in brief: We are doing this with her, we are committed to her, and we are not squishy or fudging about that at all."

But just a few weeks later, Wilder is singing a different tune. "We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan," he told E!, citing the difficulties of insuring the actress as a main obstacle to working with her. "We are currently in negotiations [with another actress] and working out the legalities of bringing her onboard."

sean parker napster - Things People Will Google After Seeing 'The Social Network'

(also: sean parker facebook, sean parker drugs, sean parker drug arrest)

Justin Timberlake's
first appearance on screen in 'The Social Network' shows him shirtless (hello, ladies!), reclining in bed, sharing a post-coital conversation with a Stanford co-ed. When he mentions that he's an entrepreneur who invented a site that sounds, to her, "like Napster," he confirms that it was Napster. Everyone knows Sean Parker invented Napster, she tells him -- upon which he confirms that he is Sean Parker, in the flesh.

Waaait a minute, you might say if you remember Napster's heyday and used to spend hours every day downloading songs on the slightest whim (not that we would ever, ever do that, because it's totally illegal). Didn't Shawn Fanning found Napster? Did producers change his name in the film? Why would they do that?

Off you go to Google, to discover that no, the movie didn't mix up their names. While Shawn Fanning may be the more well-known of Napster's creators (in part because it was his initial idea, earning him a spot on the cover of Time magazine), Sean Parker was his business partner. As teenagers, Sean and Shawn -- both gifted hackers -- became friends online (awww) and collaborated on launching Napster when Parker was 19 and Fanning was 18.

The basic details of the movie are true: After Napster was shut down, Parker founded Plaxo, departing the company following a dispute with the company's investors. He went looking for the next big thing and discovered it in Facebook, becoming an adviser to Mark Zuckerberg and eventually being named Facebook's president -- before he was arrested for drug possession and asked to leave company. (Parker still owns 4 percent of Facebook.)

So Sean Parker did (co-)found Napster -- but as to whether someone would blurt out his name and not Shawn Fanning's as the man behind the music-downloading service, we still have our doubts. (Ah, Hollywood.)
