It's OK to Like 'The Artist'

It's OK to like 'The Artist.' Really. Chances are, you haven't even seen 'The Artist' yet, but the general consensus from the Oscar cognoscenti (recently promoted from Colonel Consensus) has turned sour on the film. At first, General Consensus hailed 'The Artist' as the bees' knees. "Hooray, 'The Artist,' you're so different. We like you!" But, alas, General Consensus is a finicky fellow. Because, as of late -- even though it's still the favorite to take home an Oscar for Best Picture -- admitting that you like 'The Artist' will get you about the same reaction as admitting that you think the Gin Blossoms' 'New Miserable Experience' is one of the best albums of the early '90s. Yes, 'The Artist' has a lot more in common with the Gin Blossoms than you might think.

Jeremy Irvine, 'War Horse' Star, on the Guilt of Overnight Fame

Jeremy Irvine was a tree. Before landing the lead role in Steven Spielberg's Oscar fare 'War Horse,' Irvine was playing a tree in a play that featured not one word of dialogue. Now Irvine is being recognized on the street, which -- as he admits -- freaks him out. Considering that 'War Horse' hasn't even been released yet, that aspect of his new job is not likely to change any time soon.

David Fincher on 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and Working on 'Return of the Jedi'

David Fincher is not happy with the trailer for his new movie, 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.' He feels it gives off too much of an 'Inception' vibe, and that's not the kind of movie that he made. "I had screaming fights with Sony," he admits. He wasn't always so opinionated. "I was much more collaborative then," Fincher reflected when discussing some of the concessions he made while shooting a George Michael video in the early 1990s. Today, Fincher has a reputation for being the feisty director of some of the most stylized films of the last 16 years -- from 'Se7en' to 'The Social Network' -- and he doesn't particularly like doing press, which, when you're sitting in a room with Fincher, is evident. Not in any sort of "I'm above this" disposition. What I found was a genuinely interesting person who, at least in this type of situation, could almost be described as shy. Fincher was manic at times, restrained at others, but always full of surprises. Put it this way: during the course of this interview, I certainly didn't expect to hear Fincher do an impression of Scooby-Doo. Yet I did. Three times.

Max von Sydow on 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,' 'Flash Gordon' and 'Strange Brew'

When I was six-years-old, Max von Sydow sure scared the living hell out of me. Now, this had nothing to do with 'The Exorcist'; instead, my skittish younger self was truly terrified of von Sydow's performance as Ming the Merciless in 'Flash Gordon' -- something that I felt compelled to admit to von Sydow. Which wasn't easy because -- even at 82 years old -- von Sydow is still an imposing figure. As gracious as von Sydow is, he's still a tall man that has a sometimes gruff, "seen it all, done it all" look on his face that bellows, "I'm not going to put up with any of your shit, punk." (Thankfully, he did.)

The 8 Stupidest Movies to Ever Receive a Golden Globe Nomination

Congratulations, 2012 Golden Globe nominees, you can hold your head high knowing that you now have something in common with 'Patch Adams.' No one can ever take that away from you. It's quite an honor. (And, yes, 'Patch Adams' really was nominated for a Golden Globe.) You see, the reason the Golden Globes are not the most respected awards is because it's voted on by a very small group of foreign (ahem) journalists who have been known to be susceptible to, let's say, (ahem) outside influences that may or may not determine what gets a nomination.

Mike Ryan's Year-End 5 Best Top Movies List

I received an urgent notice this morning that, because it's the end of the calendar year, it's my responsibility to write a top movies list. I find this peculiar. Why would anyone want to read a list of top movies written by me? At the end of the year? It just seems like such a specific request, I can't imagine that anyone would want to read my list of top movies. And, to be honest, I'm not trying to be smug, but there really aren't a lot of top movies out there -- especially from this year. Alas, I'm not one to ignore a direct order from a superior, so here's a list of the Five Best Top Movies. [Ed. note: We meant "Top Five Best Movies"]
