Box Office: Bounty Hunters, Repo Men and Wedgies, Oh My!

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland had a second week at the top with a total to date of $209 million nationwide. Green Zone showed once again that war movies aren't making big box office. Last week's other new releases She's Out of My League, Remember Me and Our Family Wedding did ho-hum numbers with the latter debuting at sixth. Here's the top five:

1.
Alice in Wonderland: $62.7 million
2. Green Zone: $14.3 million
3. She's Out of My League: $9.8 million
4. Shutter Island: $8.1 million
5. Remember Me: $8.09 million

We've got three new ones this week:

The Bounty Hunter
What's It All About: A bounty hunter thinks he's hit the jackpot when he gets an assignment to bring in his ex-wife after she jumps bail.
Why It Might Do Well: Looks like a kind of romantic action flick that hopes to appeal to both genders.
Why It Might Not Do Well: While I liked Aniston on Friends, I've never cared for her work on the big screen.
Number of Theaters: 3,000
Prediction: $22

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

What's It All About: Family comedy in which a young boy must face the greatest challenge of his life: middle school.
Why It Might Do Well: Awkward adolescence is something just about everyone can identify with, and the movie is based on a book that has sold 24 million copies.
Why It Might Not Do Well: All those wedgies and swirlies may bring back painful memories for some.
Number of Theaters: 3,100
Prediction: $18 million

Right Now on TV Squad

Our brothers and sisters over at TV Squad have busted through the boob tube and brought with them the following juicy bits of must-see eye candy.
  • Alas, Firefly is gone for good, but actor Alan Tudyk, who played Wash on the late sci fi series, can be seen in the upcoming revamped version of The Rockford Files.
  • Speaking of Firefly, the show is getting a new comic book incarnation written by, of all people, comedian Patton Oswalt.
  • I prefer to live in a spoiler-free zone but I realize not everyone feels the same. Those who want to know what's coming should check out Spoiler's Anonymous, to see what's happening on Castle, Lost, Dexter and a few others.
  • Conan O'Brien is legally prohibited from being on TV for awhile, so he's taking his brand of funny on the road. Check out some of the details here.
  • Facebook users have spoken and Betty White will indeed be hosting Saturday Night Live for a Mother's Day themed episode on May 8, where she will be joined by several former cast members who are also mothers.
  • ...and finally, Kerri Russell has signed on for the pilot episode and potential series Wilde Kingdom which stars Will Arnett.

Box Office: The Green League Remembers Our Wedding

I knew Alice in Wonderland was going to do well but I seriously underestimated just how well. Alice had the biggest March opening ever, as well as the strongest opening for a 3D movie and had the best opening in history for a non-sequel. Here's the top five:

1. Alice in Wonderland: $116.1 million
2. Brooklyn's Finest: $13.4 million
3. Shutter Island: $13.2 million
4. Cop Out: $9.2 million
5. Avatar: $8.1 million

We've got a whopping four new releases this week:

The Green Zone
What's It All About: Based on a novel by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, this one is about a U.S. soldier's hunt for weapon's of mass destruction in Iraq during which he learns that factions on both sides of the issue are spinning the truth for their own ends.
Why It Might Do Well: Matt Damon stars, United 93's Paul Greengrass is directing and the film is getting a 71% Fresh rating over at Rottentomatoes.com.
Why It Might Not Do Well: There are still enough strong movies in release to keep this one from climbing too high.
Number of Theaters: 2,900
Prediction: $16 million

Our Family Wedding
What's It All About: When a young couple announces their plans to wed, their respective fathers (Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia) immediately lock horns.
Why It Might Do Well: America Ferrera stars as the bride and despite Ugly Betty's recent cancellation I always liked her.
Why It Might Not Do Well: WIth or without the ethnic spin, the "families-butt-heads-before-the-wedding" story has been done to death. Also, I so can't stand Carlos Mencia.
Number of Theaters: 1,500
Prediction: $6 million

We May Still Get One More John Hughes Movie

Last night's Oscar tribute to writer, producer, director John Hughes who passed away last August was moving (that song "Don't You Forget About Me" always takes me back) and it was pretty cool to see so many stars of his films in one place (watch it after the jump). Speaking of which, is it just me or does Macaulay Culkin look like he has not changed at all since he was 10?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there may yet be at least one more movie in the Hughes filmography. Grisbys Go Broke is the title of an unproduced Hughes screenplay that is currently floating around Hollywood and it's the story of a wealthy Chicago family who lose everything and are forced to move to the sticks. This is one of many unproduced/unpublished pieces the writer's familly found after his passing.

Apparently word was spreading last Friday that Paramount was interested in the property and that they were considering having it produced by Joe Roth of Alice in Wonderland fame. Paramount has since stated that they are not looking to buy the screenplay. Whether it's just too early for them to say anything or they are genuinely not interested is hard to say. Paramount produced several of Hughes' movies including Pretty in Pink (a personal favorite), Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Considering the number of hit movies Hughes was attached to I have to imagine some studio will be interested.

What do you think? Interested in one more John Hughes film, or should we leave it alone if he can't direct it himself? Read

Right Now on TV Squad

Our brothers and sisters over at TV Squad have busted through the boob tube and brought with them the following juicy bits of must-see eye candy.
  • Crack open some Slurm and rejoice! The new episodes of Futurama are going to be hitting Comedy Central on June 24!
  • Alas, Comedy Central has decided to cancel Michael and Michael Have Issues, the show which starred Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, both veterans of The State.
  • Smallville has been renewed for a tenth season. Can we expect to see Tom Welling finally don the famous red and blue tights?
  • Neil Patrick Harris is one of the hardest working guys in show business, and now it's got him feeling blue. Specifically, he has signed on as voice talent for the upcoming Smurfs movie.
  • Will & Grace star Deborah Messing is taking another stab at series television. Wright Vs. Wrong will be a sitcom featuring Messing as a conservative politician.
  • ...and finally, Rob Lowe is leaving ABC for NBC. He is departing Brothers and Sisters and moving to sitcom territory by joining the cast of Parks and Recreation.

Box Office: Alice in Brooklyn

Shutter Island held strong, hanging onto the top spot in its second week with last weeks two new releases Cop Out and The Crazies hanging pretty close to one another in second and third. Here's the top five:

1. Shutter Island: $22.7 million
2. Cop Out: $18.2 million
3. The Crazies: $16 Million
4. Avatar: $13.6 million
5. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief: $9.5 million

Alice in Wonderland
What's It All About: 3D adaptation of the Lewis Carroll fantasy.
Why It Might Do Well: Director Tim Burton may not have a perfect track record (Planet of the Apes, anyone?) but he's the go-to guy for weird. With Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, this trip down the rabbit hole should be one to remember.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Might this be too creepy for the kids?
Number of Theaters: 3,400
Prediction: $64 million

Brooklyn's Finest

What's It All About: A crime drama focusing on three Brooklyn police officers over the course of a single week.
Why It Might Do Well: Looks like a compelling story and having the likes of Richard Gere and Don Cheadle in the cast can't hurt.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Some of the potential audience for this may be drawn away by Shutter Island, and Brooklyn's Finest so far has a mere 31% at Rottentomatoes.com.
Number of Theaters: 1,800
Prediction: $8 million
