Hugh Jackman Joins 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan'

Call it a leading role, call it an unbilled cameo. Either way, one thing is clear: Wolverine is headed to China.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hugh Jackman has joined the cast of 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,' helmed by Chinese-American director Wayne Wang.

Set during the 19th century, the story follows Snow Flower and Lily, two friends who struggle with the social and cultural norms of the time.

Given the storyline, it is unclear how large Jackman's role will be. The Reporter quoted local Chinese media as characterizing his role as the male lead; however, Jackman's publicist is insisting that the star is doing an "unbilled cameo."

DreamWorks to 'Eat, Sleep, Poop'

Eat, Sleep, PoopDr. Scott W. Cohen's 'Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby's First Year' is headed for a big-screen treatment.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks pre-emptively scooped up the rights to the book, which won't actually arrive in bookstores until March 30. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, currently in post-production on 'Dinner for Schmucks' starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, will spearhead 'Eat, Sleep, Poop' (not to be confused with the Julia Roberts dramedy, 'Eat, Pray, Love') via their Imagenation Abu Dhabi shingle. DreamWorks has also signed 'Four Christmases' scribes Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson to ink the screenplay.

Phase 4 Picks Up U.S. Rights to Hugh Hefner Doc

Hugh Hefner has found himself a new spring bunny.

Look for the Brigitte Berman documentary, 'Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel,' to come to a theater near you this spring.

According to Variety, Phase 4 Films has purchased all U.S. rights to the Brigitte Berman documentary, 'Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel,' (and nontheatrical rights in Canada) and is planning on a late spring 2010 release. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September.

Roman Polanski Working on 'God of Carnage' Adaptation, Says Wife

The embattled Roman Polanski may have a new project in the works: adapting and directing a film version of Yasmina Reza's Tony-winning play 'God of Carnage.'

Of course, he has vital details to work out first, such as remaining under house arrest at his Switzerland chateau and fighting extradition to the U.S. in the still-unresolved 33-year-old sex case against him.

Even from house arrest, however, Polanski is still at work as he finishes post-production on his latest film, 'The Ghost Writer,' which will have its world premiere at the 60th annual Berlin International Film Festival next month. Based on a novel by Robert Harris, 'The Ghost Writer' stars Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 'Avatar' has officially surpassed 'Titanic''s overseas box-office record thanks to impressive performances in countries like France, Spain and the U.K. Currently, 'Avatar''s overseas total now stands at $1.288 billion, putting it comfortably ahead of 'Titanic''s $1.242 billion.

Worldwide, 'Avatar' has grossed an astounding $1.836 billion, a mere tip of the iceberg away from 'Titanic''s $1.842 billion. 'Avatar' is expected to take the worldwide crown from 'Titanic' today.

YouTube to Test Online Movie Rentals

Is YouTube about to become the new Netflix?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the popular video site has teamed with the Sundance Film Festival to promote watching movies on its site, including 'The Cove,' which won Best Documentary at last year's fest.

YouTube will reportedly offer five indie film titles that will be available for streaming for a "a day or two," at $3.99 per flick. Senior executives from Google, which owns YouTube, are attending Sundance to persuade filmmakers and distributors that their movies should also be available for streaming rental, and are pushing to strike financial arrangements that will seal some deals.

Chinese Government Pulls 'Avatar' From 2D Screens

You might say Pandora is being removed from the box -- or at least from 2D movie screens in China, where 'Avatar' has become its highest-grossing film to date.

According to the LA Times, the government is pulling the Golden Globe-winning epic from 1,628 2D theaters. Its replacement: a biopic based on the life of Confucius.

In the meantime, 'Avatar' can still be seen in the approximately 900 theaters that house its 3D version. But the question remains: What caused the Chinese government to take such action?
