When I was seven years old, my mother had to pry the 'Cinderella' VHS from my clenched fist. At that time, if the characters were not drawn by hand, I was skeptical of a movie's validity.

She replaced my beloved animated fairy tale with what is best described as a "film" about a family who sings together for no reason at all. After I exhausted myself of whining, pleading, and ultimately bargaining to no avail, my mother and I shared a blanket on the couch and turned on 'The Sound of Music.'

The scenery was the first to capture me. The hills were indeed alive as the mountains of Austria rolled before my innocent eyes. Maria danced on the mountain with wild abandon, lost in her song of the brook and praying lark. I did not merely watch; I followed Maria through the Abbey, to her new position with the Von Trapps, and through each song that touched my soul and uplifted my inexperienced heart.
