And the Oscar Buzz Goes to ... 'Nine'

Nine, Daniel Day-LewisThe Broadway musical-based 'Nine' has everything a feature film could want: splashy musical numbers, an A-list cast to die for, and lush European locations sure to make even the most hard-boiled moviegoer swoon. So why has 'Nine' grossed only $18.2 million at the box office to date? And why aren't people flocking in droves to see it? As one moviegoer noted after seeing the film, "There's two hours of my life I'll never get back. That was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen."

'Avatar': Fun Fantasy or Political Statement?

Avatar'Avatar' is a big blockbuster with gorgeous visuals and awesome 3D effects. It's not so much a movie you watch as it is a movie in which you immerse yourself, soaring along with the dragons, rooting for the good guys and hoping the bad guys perish in a fiery blaze.

But is 'Avatar' a popcorn fantasy flick or a carefully construed message movie? The answer is -- well, a bit of both. The film is a non-stop action flick that's exquisite to look at -- but there's no denying director James Cameron has loaded one of the most expensive films ever made with messages about terrorism, environmental chaos, and government corruption.

Ricky Gervais hosting Golden GlobesRicky Gervais has a lot going on. How he keeps up with everything is a mystery to us, but we hope he never stops. The funny every-guy is "flattered and excited" about his new gig hosting the Golden Globes, but don't look for any big production numbers. He plans to skip the song-and-dance routines and stick with what works for him -- being himself, putting the focus on the winners, and popping in here and there to keep things rolling along.

We caught up with him this week, and along with the Globes, he talked about his new animated HBO series 'The Ricky Gervais Show,' the novelty of being heard by Inuit fishermen, and why he plans to keep working Steve Carell "until he collapses like an old horse on a farm."

Top 10 Film Adaptations of 2009

The good thing about making a movie based on a book is that the foundation is already there. The not-so-good thing is when the film doesn't follow the book closely enough for viewers ('My Sister's Keeper'), leaves viewers wanting more ('The Men Who Stare at Goats'), or just plain doesn't translate well to the big screen ('Angels & Demons').

But even condensed into a meager two hours, there are plenty of films that do measure up, either in full or enough to make our list of the top 10 film adaptations of 2009. See if you agree with our choices, and feel free to add your own in the comments below.
