Free Movie of the Day: 'Idle Hands'

Spoofing horror flicks is a time-honored tradition that reached its peak with the 'Scream' trilogy. 'Idle Hands,' our free movie of the day, is an overlooked gem of the genre.

Unfortunately, the film was released less than two weeks after the Columbine shootings, so it was a victim of colossal bad timing. Nobody was interested in watching teens meet their fate, even in jest.

Free Movie of the Day: 'The 39 Steps'

The 39 StepsAlfred Hitchcock's films are practically a genre unto themselves. And like so many film legends, his reputation has actually become more deeply entrenched since his 1980 death. So how, you may ask, did said reputation come about? 'The 39 Steps,' made in 1935, is an early example of the Hitchcock style, and shows that his methods were already firmly in place.

All the things we love about Hitchcock are on display here: the unusual camera angles, unorthodox framing, the early death of a key character, the oddly comical bit players, and of course, the director's cameo (about seven minutes into the film, in this case).

Free Movie of the Day: 'The Lonely Guy'

After proving his mettle in a trio of comedies with Carl Reiner ('The Jerk,' 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid' and 'The Man With Two Brains'), Steve Martin hooked up with Arthur Hiller for this oddball film about Larry Hubbard, a greeting-card writer who finds his girl in bed with another man, breaks up with her, and proceeds to discover the depths of loneliness.
