Selena Gomez Headed to 'Monte Carlo'

Selena GomezAs far as Selena Gomez is concerned, it's going to be a very short walk from Waverly Place to Monaco.

Fox 2000 has signed the Disney Channel star of 'Wizards of Waverly Place' as one of the three leads in Tom Bezucha's comedy 'Monte Carlo,' which is being co-produced by none other than Nicole Kidman, alongside Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan. Kidman herself may take a supporting role, though nothing has been confirmed.

Also in talks for a role in the film is 'Gossip Girl' star Leighton Meester. ReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadRead

Black Hollywood's 10 Game-Changing Films

This being Black History Month, we figured school kids are probably a little tired of the same old textbook tales of Rosa Parks and Brown vs. Board of Education.

Fortunately, black history has been made on the screen, too, with dozens of significant features that have attempted to get the story down on film and cast some light on the turbulent journey of black America. And let us apologize in advance for leaving out 'Roots'--first on a technicality (it was a TV mini-series, not a feature film), and second because it was so influential that we've retired its jersey.

Here are 10 that we think were game-changers. ReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadRead

A Little Romance Goes a Long Way at the Box Office

Dear JohnIt wasn't some rock 'em, sock 'em action flick that knocked 'Avatar' off the top of the box-office charts; and it wasn't a broad, gross-out Judd Apatow comedy, either. All it took was an old-fashioned, tear-jerker romance like 'Dear John,' which took in $32 million to 'Avatar''s $23 million last weekend.

It seems like a no-brainer now, but despite being panned by critics, Lasse Hallstrom's tearful romance between Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum has proven an old Hollywood truism: you can't fake chemistry. And with the onset of Valentine's Day there's no better way to pack moviegoers into the theater than a romance.

In fact, if a new report from Forbes is any indication, a steamy love story is the best bet to launch a franchise into the box-office stratosphere. ReadReadReadReadReadReadReadReadRead

Carrie Underwood Headed to the Big Screen

Carrie UnderwoodHaven't seen enough of Carrie Underwood lately? Fear not. The country music warbler and erstwhile 'American Idol' star has signed up for her big-screen debut in the indie drama 'Soul Surfer.' The film is based on the autobiography by teenage surfing champ Bethany Hamilton, who was 13 when she lost her arm in a 2003 attack by a 15-foot tiger shark in Hawaii. Despite the setback, she hit the waves again within weeks and resumed professional competitions.

In the inspirational flick, Hamilton will be played AnnaSophia Robb, who starred in 'Bridge to Terabithia' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' as well as Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt as Hamilton's parents. ReadRead

That Guy! Jay O. Sanders

Jay O SandersMoviegoers might be excused for thinking of Jay O. Sanders -- with his sandy, curly hair and his 6' 4" stature -- as a serious Will Ferrell. But they'd be missing the point. The Shakespearean-trained native of Austin, Texas, is currently starring alongside Mel Gibson in 'Edge of Darkness,' and has been on theater screens since 1979, usually playing the rugged member of the entourage (be it as a buddy, political staffer, or action guy) whose best scene usually finds him giving a brief speech as the voice of reason when the rest of his friends are veering off-course amid a storm of testosterone.

Find out why you ought to know him, and what else you should know about him, after the jump.

Watch 'Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam' Online

It's hard to believe it's been nearly 17 years since Heidi Fleiss entered our consciousness. In case you're too young to remember -- or know her only as one of those unfortunate plastic-surgery victims-Fleiss, aka "The Hollywood Madam," was busted in 1993 for running a brothel that catered to some of Hollywood's elite actors, movers, and shakers -- a client list that read like roll call at a SAG meeting.

Nick Broomfield's documentary recalls the whole sordid mess, getting down in the dirt by interviewing various hookers, porn stars, and most importantly Fleiss, her movie-biz boyfriend Ivan Nagy, and "Madam Alex," the woman allegedly ushered Fleiss into the oldest profession. ReadRead

Free Movie of the Day: 'The Guru'

After all the hoopla surrounding 'Slumdog Millionaire,' I couldn't help but dust off this wacky, unheralded 2002 comedy about an Indian dance instructor who's convinced by his friend to seek his fortune as an actor in New York City.

Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry) is warned by his parents not to go Stateside -- naturally -- but you have to laugh when another relative tells him, "You will be famous -- like Ricky Martin!" Ah, such dreams ... and today's pick for free movie of the day.
