Japanese actor George Takei took to Twitter to take on the whitewashing of the upcoming film adaptation of the manga 'Akira.'The beloved graphic novel was made into a 1988 animated film, and the 2011 American remake would be live-action.
'Akira' is a sci-fi/action story set in 2019, in a futuristic city called Neo-Tokyo, but the actors being considered for the lead roles are Robert Pattinson (Tetsuo) and Justin Timberlake (Kaneda).
Along with thousands of others, Takei ('Star Trek') wants to ensure that Warner Bros.' adaptation of 'Akira' will star Asian actors.
Takei tweeted: "Akira epic fail--all actors up for Kaneda & Tetsuo are white?" Then on Friday, Takei wrote "Sign & RT the petition here: http://ow.ly/4ALY4 #ShameOnWB"
