We're breaking down all the Oscar contenders for you, so that you can decide whether you want to see them -- or at the very least, hold your own at cocktail parties. Next up: 'Black Swan,' the highly sensual and sometimes grisly psychological thriller.

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Actress (Natalie Portman), Best Director (Darren Aronofsky), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing

What It's About: Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a top ballerina in a prestigious New York City company. When she finally achieves her dream role as the lead in 'Swan Lake,' she begins to crack under the pressure of a demanding director, an overbearing mother and a sultry new dancer (Mila Kunis) who may either be helping her open up and explore wild new ideas, or secretly sabotaging her to fail. In between skin-crawling scenes of tension and beautifully filmed choreography, 'Black Swan' is the story of a young woman consumed with her passion, who may or may not be losing her mind in her quest to be perfect.

Why You Should See It: If you were a fan of director Darren Aronofsky's previous film, 'The Wrestler,' you might know that he intended 'Black Swan' to serve as a companion piece. It's easy to see; both are detailed and intimate looks at the culture and personalities of a physically demanding performance art. And like Mickey Rourke's Randy the Ram, Natalie Portman gives a completely invested performance. She is shocking audiences' perceptions of her image, by disappearing into the role of Nina, and revealing the intense highs and lows of a pressure-filled dancing star.

It's Kind Of Like: 'Carrie' meets 'The Red Shoes'
