Rooney Mara Is 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'

After a seemingly endless search, Deadline revealed today that actress Rooney Mara has landed the coveted lead role of Lisbeth Salander in 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.'

She'll join the previously cast Daniel Craig ('Casino Royale'), who signed on to play journalist Mikael Blomkvist at the end of last month. Robin Wright is also in talks to join the film, as Blomkvist's lover, Erika Berger.

The project will re-team Mara with director David Fincher, with whom she worked on 'The Social Network,' about the rise of the popular social media network site Facebook. 'The Social Network' arrives in theaters on Oct. 1.

As previously reported, a number of A-list actresses were up for the part -- everyone from 'Inception' star Ellen Page to Mia Wasikowska ('Alice in Wonderland').

Mara's previous acting credits include 'Youth in Revolt' and this year's 'Nightmare on Elm Street' reboot.

Her sister, actress Kate Mara, appeared in 'Brokeback Mountain.'

Screw Rooney!!! I hope she knows she's going to get bashed for trying to impersonate Noomi Rapace's Lisbeth Salander. All the true Millenium Trilogy fans should boycott this crappy American version. Why are they even bothering making a US version? There's nothing wrong with the Swedish version. In conclusion, the series should NOT BE REMADE!!! Leave excellence as it is. Go see the original.

Who the heck is Rooney Mara? Anyway, she's got one hell of a task ahead of her. I've never read the books and have only seen the first movie, but Noomi Rapace was perfect in the role. It probably helps that I'd never heard of her (has anyone?), but I'll have a real tough time picturing Lisbeth as anyone other than her when I read the books and watch the remakes.

Why must we remake a perfectly good Swedish film? Why do we Americans feel we cannot possibly sit down and watch a foreign film with subtitles. Swedes watch American films in English all of the time. I find it a bit embarrassing that we take a perfectly good foreign film and remake it Hollywood style in English. The second movie is out now in Swedish as well. Go see them - they are amazing. The third is out in Swedish and soon to be released in America with subtitles.

I saw the movie when it was released on DVD and was shocked to find out the they were going to do another movie in Hollywood based on this book. I liked the original movie and even though part of me is curious to see how they will add thier own twist and version the other part of me feels that some things should be "original"

I guess I'm too old to appreciate graphic depictions permanently etched into the flesh of an otherwise attractive woman. I see too many women and girls with tatooes that make them look cheap and degraded. As they get older, pirceings and tatooes just make them look creepy

This movie should NOT be remade. The original stands on its own merit - strong characters and a great story. Hollywood is only going to bastardize it. I wish someone would release the Swedish films here in the USA and Sony should just donate all those millions to helping the victimized women that are portrayed in this amazing trilogy.

Having seen the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo I doubt I will bother with the Hollywood version. The origional have REAL people playing the parts--warts and all.

Yes, I agree on your last part about "warts and all". Most likely, like any other movie in hollywood, they are going to airbrush out the blemishes and flaws of the actors and actresses that play the characters! The swedish version helped to paint an excellent picture of the characters in the book because they showed the people as their true, flawed selves. I do not know if I will see the hollywood version, but I will always regard the original movies as the best!

If you, dear reader, are stumped, if you are puzzled by who this young lady is, have an expert at teh internets introduce you to the concept of Google. It's not hard, really. I don't know or care who she is, frankly, but she is cute and I'd rather an unknown actress gets the role instead of one of the same. old. faces.
