Are you a DC Comics fan? A Marvel Comics fan? Both? Well, if you're the former (or the third, as I am), DC Comics' parent company, Warner Bros., has put together an in-house documentary, Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics, timed to celebrate DC's 75th-anniversary as a comic book publisher. The documentary won't hit virtual and actual stores until November 9th, but in the meantime, here are a few choice details, courtesy of Warner Bros.' press release (via SuperHeroHype) :

"Produced by the Academy Award ® -nominated team behind Spellbound (Feature Documentary), Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics combines excerpts from comics, films and television series with the insight of some of history's most influential comic book creators and editors, among them Neal Adams, Karen Berger, Mike Carlin, Dan DiDio, Neil Gaiman, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Paul Levitz, Dwayne McDuffie, Grant Morrison, Dennis O'Neil, Paul Pope, Louise Simonson, Mark Waid, Len Wein, and Marv Wolfman."

As interested as I am in DC Comics history, a documentary produced by and for Warner Bros. raises concerns about objectivity (or rather the lack thereof). Will the documentary explore the various lawsuits (some still ongoing) over Superman by the Jerry Siegel and Joseph Schuster estates? Will Bill Finger, a writer instrumental in creating Batman, get a nod? While Bob Kane gets sole credit for creating Batman, his background, and supporting characters, Finger made important contributions to the Batman mythos (e.g., The Joker, The Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, The Riddler). Kane, however, employed Finger under a contract, "work-for-hire" basis. Will the documentary explore other creator-publisher conflicts (e.g., royalties, digital rights) or will it be a 90-minute lovefest, an old to all great things DC Comics-related? The latter looks like the more obvious approach.
