In honor of Friday's release of The Expendables, we're taking a week-long look at the action films of Sir Sylvester Stallone -- which is to say we're skipping his comedies. Out of respect.
Title: Tango & Cash
Setting: Present-day 1989
Our hero: Sharp-dressed L.A. cop Ray Tango (Sylvester Stallone), who's forced to team up with hot-headed L.A. cop Gabriel Cash (Kurt Russell) when they're both framed for the same murder
Our villain/s: Dasterdly arms dealer Yves Perret (Jack Palance in full-on cackle mode)
The stakes: Their good names
How long until our first confrontation? Tango takes out a tanker truck full of blow in the very first scene.
Line of dialogue that nails it: "Are we clever or what? Come on, let's blow this place up."
Coolest display of might: The grenade down the pants was a nice touch.
Is that...? Yes, that's really Teri Hatcher as Tango's stripper sister/Cash's love interest
Did they...? Yes, they just went and made a Rambo reference. ("He thinks he's Rambo!" "Rambo... is a pussy.")
Moral of the story: Two narcotics detectives will manage to destroy an entire quarry if given the chance and a heavily-armed "RV from Hell."
Stallone Action Scale: 7 out of 10 (rounded up from 6.8).
Russell Cross-Dressing Scale: Yikes out of 10.
