This week, we'll be re-thinking those plane tickets to...

Place: New York City
People/Characters: Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore
What Makes it Unique: A gang of underdog, nerdy scientists who use radical ghost busting technology to save Manhattan from a giant marshmallow man summoned to destroy the city, and presumably the world, by an ancient God, Gozer the Gozerian? What's not unique about that?
On a more personal level, Ghostbusters embodies the '80s to me. I'm not talking about the big glasses and the poofy hair, either; Ghostbusters embodies the sentimentality of the '80s. I watched it practically on a loop as a kid and some of the Ghostbusters action figures are the earliest toys I can remember playing with. To me, Ghostbusters will always represent creativity and youth.
Verdict: Abandon!
Reason: I'm not sure I actually need to abandon Ghostbusters because I highly doubt that the long-rumored Ghostbusters 3 will ever get off the ground (thanks, Bill Murray!), but the more I think about it the more I hope that is indeed the case. The only scenario where I'd be excited to revisit it on the big screen (they can make all the video games they want) is if all the key players from the first two films returned. Anything else just simply is not Ghostbusters in my eyes.
But even if Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts all returned, is that really such a great thing at this stage in their careers? I don't think anyone involved has gone completely downhill (though Reitman hasn't directed much of great note in over a decade), but I just can't imagine them being able to collectively summon the spark and natural chemistry that made the original film (and its sequel, which I actually enjoy just as much as the first film) so wonderful. And if that spark is not there, then there's no point in doing it.
I was open to it at one point, but I've also grown to dread the idea of a reboot/remake with a younger cast. I'm sure there are plenty of talented individuals out there who have pitched worthwhile ideas to Columbia Pictures, but does anyone really want to see a bunch of young whippersnappers taken up the proton pack mantle? I don't.
