Now this is what I was waiting for. When Tina Fey left Saturday Night Live, it left me both sad and excited. I didn't want an SNL free of the Fey, but it was about time the woman got fame beyond the comedy show -- especially considering some of the other alums who have found success on the big screen. 30 Rock was a nice change, but outside of the show, her starring projects have filled me with "eh." I've been waiting for that one special comedy -- the project that would be more than a typical bag of laughs we forget in a year or two -- something that plucks at the best of her talents and pits her against actors that seem too good to be true. Now, finally, I think she's found that gig alongside Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci.
LA Times' 24 Frames reports that a film package is being shopped to studios by CAA called Mommy & Me. While it sounds like some sort of Marley & Me twist, the project is designed to show off Streep and Fey's comedy and dramatic chops. As an added bonus, the film will be directed by Stanley Tucci. After the wonderful chemistry the pair showed in Julie & Julia, one would hope that he will grab a role in the film as well, but right now, there's no word if he will work both in front of and behind the camera.
Just think about this for a second: Fey and Streep. If there is anyone who can give Fey something meatier to work with, it's the 16-time Oscar nominee and 2-time winner. The thought of them bantering back and forth fills me with glee. And in the hands of The Tooch! His most recent directorial stint wasn't anything worth remembering (Blind Date), but this is the man who wrote and helmed Big Night. Be still, my heart!
This is a project just oozing with talent, and hopefully a studio will pick it up soon. The report says that Sony is currently in the lead, but we have a long way to go before this baby hits theaters -- the project is a mere idea right now. It still needs a scribe and script.
