Strathairn certainly isn't a stranger to stepping out of the higher profile roles of Goodnight and Goodluck and L.A. Confidential - in fact films like The River Wild, Dolores Claiborne, and The Uninvited dominate his career - but for me he's the kind of actor who can lend a bit more credibility to whatever project he's attached to. In Alphas, Strathairn would play the leader of a team of, according to Deadline, "ordinary citizens possessing extraordinary and unusual mental skills who take the law into their own hands and uncover what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able or willing to solve." Not a bad fit if you ask me.
The pilot for Alphas is set to be directed by Jack Bender, who fans of Lost will recognize as a very familiar television director (a superfan will surely correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe with 36 episodes under his belt, including the finale, Bender directed more episodes of Lost than anyone else). It's actually had a long road to finally seeing the light of day, so hopefully Syfy is the one network who will finally prove unafraid of the show's sci-fi elements, which is what Deadline explains kept the series from entering production at ABC.
