Best of the New Releases: Wish I could say...
Sadly, I haven't seen ANY of these week's releases ... yet. Let me tell you, I'm planning on fixing that post-haste. Slamdance flick I Sell the Dead finally hits DVD and Blu-ray this week. Glenn McQuaid's horror comedy got some solid reviews during its festival run and, oddly, I'm excited to see Ron Perlman play a priest. Lee Demarbre's love letter to Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut, finds it's way to DVD this week in an Unrated cut. The Sasha Grey-starring film played several high-profile genre festivals including UK FrightFest, Fantasia, Sitges and Austin's own Fantastic Fest. I missed it when it played here, and while I haven't heard great things, my love for Lewis will probably result in a rental.
Best of the Catalog Releases: Same story, I'm afraid...
Big catalog releases this week include Blue Underground's Vampyres, which they had previously released on DVD, is now available in high definition on Blu-ray. Big thanks to the folks at Blue Underground for taking the time and effort to release genre films in HD. It's a good time to be a collector thanks to these guys. Also of note is the region 1 DVD release of darkly comedic British horror flick Girly, which was originally released as Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly. Harry Knowles over at AICN likens the film to Twisted Nerve, another British flick that's worth tracking down. Here's hoping that Girly can live up to that comparison.
Complete List of Horror Movies on DVD and Blu-ray for the week of March 30th:
I Sell the Dead
Smash Cut
Vampyres
Girly
Bigfoot - a Troma Team release
The Tiger's Claw - according to the cover art this is a "Rare Lost Cult Thriller!!"
Of interest (these films aren't exactly horror but might be noteworthy to horror fans for one reason or another):
Vintage Exploitation box set - includes 7 different films from the '30s to the '60s.
Blind Date - the cover art on this proclaims that the film is a "An hot thriller in the Italian giallo tradition." Yes, "an hot thriller." It is a Mya Communciations release, though, and they have put out some solid genre films in the past, like last week's Edwige Fenech film Anna: The Pleasure, The Torment, so maybe this one is worthy of a rental.
We'll be back next week with a look at the releases for April 6th.
