AOL News reported that Mohammed Khatib, a Palestinian protest organiser who frequently leads his people against the Israelis, came up with the idea to impersonate Avatar's Na'vi after his group watched a bootleg copy of the film and likened the Palestinian experience in the West Bank to the plight of the blue-skinned creatures in the film.
"After we watched it, we began to do research on the film and discovered how much attention it was getting around the world," Khatib said of the biggest grossing film of all time. "We learned that Chinese villagers had adopted the name of the mountain range in the film for their own mountains, that hundreds of millions of people around the world saw and sympathized with the Na'vi."
Following that screening, five protesters, with the help of one makeup artist, marched upon the barrier separating them from their farm land on the West Bank dressed head to toe as James Cameron's blue creatures. And despite the fact that Israeli soldiers began launching tear gas and sound grenades at them almost immediately, Khatib still deemed the protest a success.
"When people around the world who have watched the film see our demonstration and the conditions that provoked it," said Khatib. "They will realise that the situations are identical."
