But those of us who are fans of Jon Cryer's '80s classic Hiding Out can rejoice with this news. Because if you are indeed a fan of Hiding Out, it's probable that you'd also enjoy a science fiction version of the movie -- even one that's unofficially so. See, I Am Number Four, which was written by James Frey (of A Million Little Pieces infamy) and Joby Hughes, is about a group of aliens who escape their planet just before it's destroyed by other aliens and head to Earth. The title character (that'd be "Number Four") does his hiding out as a high school student.
And of course, just like in Hiding Out, the bad guys will ultimately locate the disguised witness posing as a teen, sans his alien-beard, and there will probably be a showdown in the gymnasium. Whether or not Number Four also enters a questionable relationship with an underage girl is unknown at this time. The book, said to be the first in a six-part series, hasn't come out yet. And I haven't gotten my hands on the script from Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, either.
Since there will be six books and nine aliens, though, I wonder if each installment will be a remake of another witness-hiding-out movie. Will Numbers Five and Six dress as female musicians after watching a massacre in a parking garage? Will Number Two, who is used to living in a big city, be forced to live in the suburbs, where he can't even find any arugula? Will Number Eight shack up with the Amish? I can't wait.
