If I was in Los Angeles tonight, I can tell you exactly what I'd be doing -- getting a dose of high culture at a fancy art show at Gallery 1988. This weekend they open (in association with Mattel) Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
The show allows over 100 different artists to pay homage to the beloved 1980's toy line and cartoon through painting and sculpture. Gallery 1988 has a reputation for putting on shows with a pop culture edge -- they've based showings around Kevin Smith, Disney characters, and retro video gaming -- granting cutting-edge artists the freedom to let their geek flag fly.
Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe runs from January 8 through January 29, 2010. You can view some of the pieces below, courtesy of the Gallery 1988 blog.
