His latest epic, 'Avatar', just passed 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man's Chest' and 'The Dark Knight' to become the third highest grossing film of all time, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The film -- which has been in theaters only 21 days -- has earned just under $1.1 billion dollars worldwide, $367.5 of that coming from domestic earnings, $731.2 from foreign.
It's quickly moving in on the No. 2 spot, currently held by Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings: Return of the King' with $1.12 billion, a figure 'Avatar' is estimated to overtake sometime within the next week.

But for Cameron to take the top spot -- to paraphrase Chevy Chase in Caddyshack -- he'll have to beat himself.
Cameron's own 'Titanic' currently sits atop the list with $1.84 billion in worldwide earnings. While that figure seems almost insurmountable, with the rate of success 'Avatar' is enjoying (even with its controversial politics), it'll only be a matter of days before Cameron holds the title of both king and prince of the world box office.
