Some 30 years before Oasis' Liam and Noel Gallagher made headlines for their sibling rivalry, there was another legendary British band of battling brothers: the Kinks. Some 30 years before Oasis' Liam and Noel Gallagher made headlines for their sibling rivalry, there was another legendary British band of battling brothers: the Kinks.Director Julien Temple, whose previous films include the Sex Pistols mockumentary, 'The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle,' wants to bring the story of Ray and Dave Davies to the screen in a film named after one of their greatest hits,'You've Really Got Me.'
According to ScreenDaily, the biopic will focus on the intense relationship between the brothers, who formed the band in North London in 1964, when Ray was 20 and Dave was 17. The film will explore how they blended a music hall tradition with rock to create their unique sound. Ray Davies, who appeared in Temple's 1986 film 'Absolute Beginners,' is collaborating with the director on the film's approach.
Temple told ScreenDaily, "At the heart of it is the extraordinary love-hate relationship between these two brothers: love-hate sibling rivalry is at the core. I think it's a very rich social, cultural nexus around the Kinks. Their story is the untold story of all those big bands of the 1960s."
The actors, who have not yet been cast, will be required to actually play the Kinks' signature tunes. "I think you would want to have the music played by the actors ... that is believable and real while miming is problematic," Temple said.
We have some casting suggestions for Temple: Lee Pace ('Pushing Daisies,' 'A Single Man') as Ray Davies and Jim Sturgess ('Across the Universe') as the younger Dave Davies. Rounding out the rest of the band, how about: James McAvoy ('Wanted) and Rupert Friend ('Cheri').
If you're looking for actual musicians (and guys closer to the right age) then perhaps Alex Turner, 23, of the Arctic Monkeys, Tom Meighan, 28, of Kasabian, or Julian Casablancas or Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes could be tapped.
