"Ami" is a rags-to-riches story about George Duroy (Pattinson), a young journalist who moves from the country to Paris and becomes a success by manipulating and bedding the city's most influential women. Thurman will play the wife of one of Duroy's friends, a connected woman whom he seduces and then marries.
Kristin Scott Thomas also has joined the cast as a socialite who falls for Duroy.
The film is being helmed by London theater director Declan Donnellan, who's making his film debut. Shooting is scheduled next year in Paris.
It had previously been reported that Nicole Kidman was to star opposite Pattinson, but a deal was never made.
