The PGA announced Wednesday that Lionsgate's 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire' will receive the award, which is intended, according to a guild statement, to "honor a motion picture, television program, studio, network, producer or other individual entity whose work illuminates provocative social issues in an accessible and elevating fashion."

'Milk,' the Harvey Milk biopic that featured an Oscar-winning performance by Sean Penn, took the honor last year. Other recipients have included 'The Great Debaters,' 'An Inconvenient Truth' and 'Good Night, and Good Luck.'

The film's producers, which include Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, will be honored at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Hollywood Palladium.
