Roman PolanskiA stint in jail hasn't stopped celebrated director Roman Polanski from finishing his upcoming film 'The Ghost,' said the film's screenwriter.

Robert Harris, the author of historical novels Fatherland and Imperium, recently said Polanski gave instructions for the film score from his cell, and that plans are still in place to premiere the film at the Berlin Film Festival in February regardless of Polanski's incarceration status. Robert Harris, the author of historical novels Fatherland and Imperium, recently said Polanski gave instructions for the film score from his cell, and that plans are still in place to premiere the film at the Berlin Film Festival in February regardless of Polanski's incarceration status.

"It is a nightmare looming that the director might be in jail at the time [of the film's release] but we will just have to cope with this as the situation develops," he told The London Times. "I'm sure he would want the film to go ahead, having worked on it for two years."

The 76-year old director was arrested in Switzerland on September 26 after fleeing the United States in 1978. Polanski had already finished editing 'The Ghost,' which stars Pierce Brosnan as a British prime minister accused of war crimes, before his recent prison term.

Said Harris: "Whether the film can rise above the circumstances in which the director now finds himself, I don't know. We will test to the upper limits the notion that there's no such thing as bad publicity."

Bad publicity is an understatement. Polanski pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse in a plea bargain deal to avoid rape and sodomy charges, but fled the country upon finding out he would still be sentenced to a stay in prison. Directors are generally a mercurial and dubious lot and are usually forgiven for any off-camera behavior. But have Polanski's actions ensured that the moviegoing public will vote with their wallets and protest the movie en masse? We'll find out when 'The Ghost' is released next year.
