I have to say, I think hiking the Swiss Alps would be less tiring. I only managed one meal today, and spent much of my evening trying to obtain food or clean clothing. (Waiting in the press line made me desperate for a clean, dry shirt. It didn't seem that hot when I stepped off the plane!) The display hall feels like a fever dream, and so few of the booth displays have changed from last year that I feel like I never left.
Things were so crowded that I have returned to find every single one of my photos blurry from being jostled and carried away in the tide just as I clicked it. I've salvaged a few -- the biggest and most exciting thing being a mecha-suit from Avatar. Sadly my Avatar toy case photos were useless, but having seen the merchandise, I am still skeptical on James Cameron's epic, which seems to be populated with flying dragons and flowers.
But as always, its the geeky camaraderie that remains a nicer memory than any of the props or booth displays. I found myself jumping into the Warner Bros booth madness in order to obtain a Harry Potter bag. For the fourth year in a row, I was unsuccessful, and ended up with a Human Target one instead. But one of the guys in line immediately befriended me, made sure I kept my place in line, and we ended up hanging out for the rest of the display hall. This is a convention where you have everything in common with the guy or girl next to you, and it's easy to feel like you've known your linemates for years and years.
I have yet to encounter the wax Hugh Jackman or the wall of Iron Man suits, and am keeping my eyes peeled for them on my next trip to the floor. Kevin Kelly and I plan on hitting the floor together for some live video coverage, so fear not, homebound geeks, you'll soon feel as if you're right here with us!
Today the madness begins in earnest, so keep checking Cinematical for the latest news from the con.
