In case you're not already aware, a very awesome (and tiny) sci-fi psychological thriller hits screens this weekend in limited release called Moon. It's only arriving in theaters in New York and Los Angeles, but it will expand to more cities in the next few weeks. (See this post for which cities and when.) In the film, Sam Rockwell stars as an astronaut nearing the end of a three-year stint working on the moon. As he makes preparations to return to earth, however, something goes terribly wrong ... and then, well, things just get freaky and fun.

Cinematical interviewed
Moon director Duncan Jones earlier this week as he was getting ready to watch his first feature fly off toward movie theaters across the country -- and during that interview, we asked the man to give us his five favorite sci-fi flicks of all time. That info you can only read here (call it our first exclusive on SciFi Squad -- yay!), so check out the deets below.

After the Jump: Moon director Duncan Jones on his five favorite sci-fi films of all time ...

1. Blade Runner: "One of my all-time favorites."

2. 12 Monkeys: "[It] was just heaven to me, because it was Terry Gilliam doing sci-fi and it was just such an amazing experience."

3. The Blood of Heroes: "There was a film that had two titles, one for Europe and one for the U.S. [Salute of the Jugger]. It was a Rutger Hauer and Joan Chen movie, kind of a B-movie, but it was great. It was shot out in Australia, and I think the script writer was the same guy who wrote the script for Blade Runner, so there was a common theme there, but it was kind of a future sport film... It's a really great companion piece to Rollerball."

4. Star Wars: "Obviously, the very first Star Wars had a very huge impact on me. It was an amazing, escapist, completely realized universe, not just a world, so that was an amazing sci-fi experience."

5. Ghost in the Shell: "Again, it's a little Blade Runner-y... I thought that was great. I liked the TV show too, but I thought the film was better."

Two more things: 1. Make sure you read the entire interview over at Cinematical. 2. We want all of you sci-fi nerds to see this film because it's seriously a real treat, featuring a top notch performance from one of my favorite actors, Sam Rockwell. So go! Go now! RUN!
