1. Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail: $41 million
2. Coraline: $11.4 million
3. Taken: $11.2 million
4. He's Just Not That Into You: $8.5 million
5. Slumdog Millionaire: $8.3 million
Two new flicks this week trying to capture the hearts and dollars of teen pop enthusiasts and video game fans.
Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert ExperienceWhat's It All About: Disney's latest 3-D pop music event combines excerpts from the trios Burning Up concert tour with behind the scenes shenanigans.
Why It Might Do Well: Disney is obviously trying to duplicate the success of Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (even going so far as to use the same director) which had a $31 million opening weekend around this time last year.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Well, if the world suddenly tires of corporate-manufactured pseudo pop... Nah, I think we're looking at next week's number one movie.
Number of Theaters: 1,175
Prediction: $28 million
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-LiWhat's It All About: Smallville's Kristin Kreuk stars in this new feature adaptation of the long-running video game franchise.
Why It Might Do Well: The Street Fighter games have been around for two decades, garnering a rabid following along the way.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Personally I'm leery of films based on video games. Also, releasing this on few screens seems almost timid.
Number of Theaters: 1,000
Prediction: $7 million
I think the Jonas Brothers will be duking it out with Madea, which come to think of it is something I would pay to see. When the dust clears here's how I think it will go down:
1. Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience
2. Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail
3. Slumdog Millionaire
4. Coraline
5. Taken
Congrats to Jessica Dillon and Greg for their first place predictions, and a high five of solidarity to lostinafog for joining me in last place. In hindsight I should have realized Madea would be the number one movie, but I was overcome by a profound sense of denial. Here's how we all did:
1. Jessica Dillon: 11
1. Greg: 11
2. greatone: 10
3. Zach: 9
4. PT: 8
4. English Gavz: 8
5. Julio: 7
