1. 21: $15.3 million
2. Nim's Island: $13.2 million
3. Leatherheads: $12.6 million
4. Horton Hears A Who: $9.1 million
5. The Ruins: $8 million
Here are this week's newbies:
Prom NightWhat's It All About: Loosely based on the 1980 film of the same name which starred Jamie Lee Curtis. In this new version, a young woman named Donna and her friends are stalked by an obsessed killer on, you guessed it, prom night.
Why It Might Do Well: The trailer shows a bunch of teenage characters consistent with what you see on the CW Network, so if that's your bag you may enjoy this.
Why It Might Not Do Well: A PG-13 slasher film? That's like washing your feet without taking off your socks.
Number of Theaters: 2,400
Prediction: $11 million
Smart People What's It All About: Dennis Quaid plays a brilliant but socially incompetent college professor and Ellen Page is his similarly disposed daughter. A visit from a brother (Thomas Haden Church) and a budding romance with a former student (Sarah Jessica Parker) shake things up.
Why It Might Do Well: Page was awesome in Juno, and I'm sure lots of folks are looking to see what she does next.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Personally, I think this is the most promising of the new releases, but the scope of the film and relatively small number of theaters will keep this from finishing in the top five.
Number of Theaters: 1,150
Prediction: $7 million
Street KingsWhat's It All About: Keanu Reeves plays an LAPD cop falsely accused of murdering a fellow officer.
Why It Might Do Well: Rottentomatoes.com is giving this one a 67% fresh rating which ain't too shabby.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Neo was a man of few words. I have less faith when Reeves takes on roles that require him to talk at length.
Number of Theaters: 2,500
Prediction: $15 million
Picking a number one movie is particularly hard this week since I don't see any clear winner. If I have to make a choice (and I do) I'll go with...
1. Street Kings
2. Prom Night
3. 21
4. Nim's Island
5. Leatherheads
My own score was closer to the top of the list than the bottom which, after finishing dead last a week ago, soothes my wounded ego ever so slightly. Congrats to Erin for a perfect score, as well as a hearty "atta boy" to I Eat Robots and cubitfox for being the only other entrants to correctly predict that 21 would hold the top spot for a second week. Here are the results:
1. Erin: 16
2. uforeader: 11
2. Gregory Rubinstein: 11
2. Anna07: 11
3. Matt: 9
3. Kevin: 9
3. Napier's News: 9
3. Ray: 9
4. I Eat Robots: 8
4. cubitfox: 8
4. AJ Wiley: 8
4. Smiggy: 8
5. FutureColumnist: 7
5. DarkAgair: 7
5. Aaron: 7
6. Jessejames: 4
6. Mario: 4
