If you want my opinion -- and by reading one of my posts, you give your implied consent for me to give it to you -- Errol Morris is the best documentary filmmaker currently working, maybe of all time. The Fog of War was a revelatory and insightful interview with Vietnam-era U.S. defense secretary Robert McNamara. Mr. Death profiled an expert in capital punishment who also happens to be a Holocaust denier. The Thin Blue Line led directly to a criminal case being re-opened and an innocent man being freed from death row! Errol Morris saves lives, for crying out loud! His latest, Standard Operating Procedure, addresses the goings-on at a little prison you might have heard of called Abu Ghraib. In conjunction with the April 25 release and sponsored by indieWIRE, Morris will make personal appearances at Apple stores in L.A., San Francisco, and New York this month, showing clips from the film and discussing it with visitors. This is a pretty awesome chance to meet an Oscar-winning filmmaker and learn something about his storytelling process, and all the events are free.
Here are the scheduled appearances:
April 11, 7 p.m., Third Street Promenade (Santa Monica) Apple store.
April 23, 6:30 p.m., SoHo Apple store.
April 30, 7 p.m., San Francisco Apple store.
