1. Cloverfield: $41 million.
2. 27 Dresses: $22.4 million.
3. The Bucket List: $15.2 million.
4. Juno: $10.3 million.
5. First Sunday: $7.8million.
We've got four new releases this week, and between the laughs, greased pecs, automatic weapons, and dancing, there should be something for everyone.
How She MoveWhat's It All About: After her sister's death from a drug overdose, a girl must leave the private high school she's been attending and return to the drug and crime-infested neighborhood she came from. An opportunity to take part in a dance competition traditionally dominated by males gives her the hope of winning enough money to continue her education.
Why It Might Do Well: It should have strong youth appeal and has an 80% Fresh rating over at Rottentomatoes.com.
Why It Might Not Do Well: English teachers everywhere will be shrieking in agony over the grammatical atrocity committed by the title, and I've got to tell you its got me cringing too.
Number of Theaters: 1,500
Prediction: $12 million
Meet the SpartansWhat's It All About: In the style of the Scary Movie franchise, Not Another Teen Movie and Date Movie comes this lampooning of 300.
Why It Might Do Well: Anything's possible.
Why It Might Not Do Well: This type of parody has been done to death.
Number of Theaters: 2,600
Prediction: $10 million
RamboWhat's It All About: Long-awaited new entry in the Rambo series, with Sylvester Stallone returning as the quintessential angry Vietnam vet.
Why It Might Do Well: Stallone had a successful comeback for his Rocky character when Rocky Balboa pulled in $70 million at the domestic box office. Perhaps lightning will strike twice here. I think this will do well, but not well enough to oust Cloverfield from the number one spot.
Why It Might Not Do Well: It's been 20 years since the last installment in the franchise, and younger moviegoers may not remember the character.
Number of Theaters: 2,800
Prediction: $17 million
UntraceableWhat's It All About: A high-tech serial killer is murdering people on live internet video. The more people access the site, the faster the victim dies, and it's up to one FBI agent to stop this madman.
Why It Might Do Well: Everybody loves a good thriller, but to be honest, I don't think this one is going to qualify.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Premise seems a bit unbelievable and reminds me of a real turkey from a few years back called FeardotCom. The trailer for Untraceable has been kicking around the web for awhile, but I've seen no TV advertisements for this one.
Number of Theaters: 2,300
Prediction: $4 million
As I mentioned above, I'm betting Cloverfield holds onto the top spot for a second week, forcing Rambo into second place. Here's how I think it will play out.
1. Cloverfield
2. Rambo
3. 27 Dresses
4. How She Move
5. Meet the Spartans
And here's the results of our weekly competition. I'd be more inclined to gloat about my perfect score if I hadn't finished dead last the previous week. :) Thanks to everyone who participated.
1. Matt 16
2. Porcalina 13
3. Ray 12
3. AJ 12
4. Mike 11
4. mjd 11
