With the 2005 Gotham Awards, the first such ceremony to be thrown since the split between the Independent Feature Project (IFP) and their left coast sister, IFP/West, the former faces the unenviable task of raising the bar of their defining event to the level of ink-worthiness of the Independent Spirit Awards, the pre-Oscar beach party thrown annually by the later. Judging by the nominations released today, have they succeded? Well, they've certainly not gone Hollywood. The nominees, overall, feel very New York; all of the Big Films that screened at this year's New York Film Festival show up at least once, with Capote earning multiple nods. Best Feature nominee Keane, especially, would seem to benefit from a peculiar kind of local favoritism – Lodge Kerrigan's latest may not have even blipped on your radar screen, but my drinking buddies have been talking about it for months. Take a look at the full list yourself and tell us what you think. Oh, and if you're a representative of IFP/NY, I'd just like you to know that I probably wouldn't turn down an invitation to the event; I promise, I clean up extremely nicely. Categories
