Universal has paid seven figures for a Joss Whedon script called Goner, described as "a young woman's journey that involves a great deal of horror and some heroics." Despite appearances, it's not Buffy: The Movie, but that in itself is not totally out of the question – Whedon also confirmed reports that he's working on extending the Buffyverse by way of a telefilm that'll focus on the Slayer's sometimes-enemy/sometimes-boyfriend Spike. - For the first time ever, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is going to have two presidents. Dan Glickman, Jack Valenti's successor, will remain CEO and chairman, whilst Bob Pisano will take on the title of COO. Why put two heads on the monster? It's all part of the organization's struggle against piracy, the logic apparently being that two leaders will be harder to make a mockery of than one.
- The Independent Feature project has set an official budget cap on the films it'll consider for Spirit Awards. $20 million seems absurdly high, but president Dawn Hudson claims it's intended to give a "wide latitude in choosing original, provocative films that are still made with an economy of means."
- Sony Corp. is cutting 10,000 jobs (about 6% of its workforce) in response to woes in its electronics divison. The entertainment sector is expected hustle in effort to make up for losses which will hit $90 million this year.
