Filmmaker Ismail Merchant has died. The Bombay-born multiple-Oscar nominee is best known for his collaborations with James Ivory; the duo revived the costume drama to such an extent with films like Howard's End and A Room with a View that Merchant-Ivory has become a genre in and of itself. Merchant had recently had surgery for abdominal ulcers, and had been ill for some time. He was 68.
